Season 6 - Bye Xena! (3/07/2005)

Extras:   7/10

Summary of "Season 6 - Bye Xena!":
Well, that was a fun series, wasn't it? The series went from being somewhat campy, to extremely serious. I was never a huge fan when it was on TV, but I enjoyed the show on DVD. I'll blame my lack of excitement for the broadcast run with my spotty viewings of the episodes. I thought the final season was pretty good, and I liked the way they wrapped the show up.

I'd like to thank Davis-Anderson Merchandising for putting together a great run of DVD sets. They could have slapped these sets together with a handful of extras and fans would have purchased them, but they went the extra mile on every set. I wince at all the bonus material I have to watch to get through these sets, but they're providing excellent value to the consumers. The cast should also be commended for their participation in the DVD sets; I think they understand their fan base, and know that they'll be supported by them in future projects.

If you're a fan of the show, or someone looking for a fantasy show to get into, you can't go wrong with these sets. (read entire review)

Season 4 - Finally...we get some Bruce! (6/26/2004)
Video:   9/10
Audio:   7/10
Extras:   7/10

Summary of "Season 4 - Finally...we get some Bruce!":
Wow, 10 discs......TEN discs! They can't be faulted for cramming too much onto a disc, that's for sure! The packaging for the set is both interesting and annoying at the same time. Each panel contains 2 discs which overlap (the top overlaps the bottom). It can be a hassle to remove the bottom disc, but I'd rather see this than a 10 panel foldout; it would take up far too much room on a shelf, not to mention if you had to fold it out all the way.

I thought the extras for this season were good, though they cut back on the commentary tracks for some reason. At least there wasn't anything as bad as the "Sacrifice" featurette on the third season. Man, that was bad! Being a Bruce Campbell fan I absolutely loved the "Cabin Fever" featurette. It's about time we saw Bruce included in extras on the set.

Xena is a fun show, and this is a nice set. (read entire review)

Season 3 - It keeps getting better... (2/15/2004)
Video:   9/10
Audio:   7/10
Extras:   6/10

Buy from (US)
Summary of "Season 3 - It keeps getting better...":
Before Buffy did it with "Once More With Feeling," Xena had a musical episode. Xena and Gabrielle find themselves in a strange land in "The Bitter Suite," a continuation of the story from "Maternal Instincts" and they break out in song and dance throughout the episode. The commentary track was very insightful for that episode. Bruce Campbell was in 3 episodes this season, a good one ("King of Assassins"), an all right one ("Tsunami") and a stinker ("Vanishing Act" - branded the worst episode by some cast and crew members). Also be on the lookout for Shiri Appleby (Roswell) in "Forgiven."

The video is a nice upgrade for the set, but the "Sacrifice" extras really, really bothered me. The low audio on the "Alternate Cuts" piece was sloppy work, and the retrospective just pissed me off. Maybe I'm the only one that believes this, but I think a featurette should have a focus. Tacking a tribute to the end of that was garbage, garbage, garbage! Compared to the beautiful sets used for the interviews and commentary tracks, seeing someone sitting in an office space, or a house, with a fern and a wall as the background is total crap. Then there's the audio...I'll just shut up now. Hopefully I don't offend any Xena fans, but I'm just tellin' it the way I see it. It's a good idea to have a fan involved in the production of the set, but try to make the material look professional.

Xena fans will be happy with the robust set found here, but I hope the production quality of the extras increases for season 4. (read entire review)

Season 2 - Season 2 (2/07/2004)

Audio:   7/10
Extras:   4/10

Summary of "Season 2 - Season 2":
I was glad to see the picture was improved in season 2 over the first set. "A Day in the Life," directed by Michael Hurst, was very, very funny and I was pleased that all 3 participants provided commentary on the episode. Another favorite episode of mine would be "The Quest" with Bruce Campbell. I'll be honest here... I think I'll always list the Bruce Campbell episodes as being my favorite because I really like him as an actor, but also because his character cracks me up.

The season 2 set was an obvious improvement over the first season, both in terms of video quality and extras. (read entire review)

Season 1 - Yiiiii! Yiiiii! Yiiiii! (5/24/2003)
Video:   5/10
Audio:   7/10
Extras:   3/10

Buy from (US)
Summary of "Season 1 - Yiiiii! Yiiiii! Yiiiii!":
While I find Xena to be entertaining, it's also the definition of "cheese." Her loud "Yiiiii! Yiiiii! Yiiiii!" battle call combined with the impossible jumps and kicks, and the toungue-in-cheek humor make this a show to groan at. I'm not saying it's a bad show, it's just a lighthearted show that shouldn't be taken seriously. Xena is the perfect show to watch when you need a good laugh, and some cool action.
