Summary of "Season 2 - I love the army (shows)!": I have a special place for shows involving cops, CIA, FBI, MI-5, and the army. They're usually packed with action, and provide some heart-pumping moments. The Unit provides all the action that guys will love, but also includes material for the women - the "home" scenes. I'm not suggesting the "home" stories are slower, or boring; sometimes I enjoy them more than the guys being shot at. Season 2 continues the excellent episodes from season 1, and ends on an amazingly frustrating (for the DVD watcher) cliffhanger.
I enjoyed the extras on the season 2 set; the three featurettes were good, and the commentary tracks were entertaining. I wish Shawn Ryan would be involved in more of the commentaries (his work on the first season of The Shield is still my favorite). This is a good DVD set, and one worth adding to a collection. Summary of "Season 1 - Action on missions, and at home": I said before that I wasn't sure how the "home-life" aspect of the show would work, but it works, very, very well. The women are the glue that holds the soldiers lives together, and they help hold the series together as well. The "mission" part of the episode was always interesting, but I started caring a lot about the "home-life" part of the show; they have a continuing storyline, while the missions are contained to one episode. There's more action in the missions, but more drama back home, and together they make a very compelling show.
I really enjoyed watching the first season of The Unit. Great stories, and acting, plus Shawn Ryan delivered another great commentary track. Shawn was a panelist at the recent TV-DVD conference (I couldn't get him last year, but did this year), and I asked him why The Unit was pretty bare of extras. He told me the set was rushed, and that was all they had time to do. Hopefully they'll set aside a bit more time for the second season when it's released before season 3 airs... assuming the show gets picked up again (which it should - the ratings are good).
