Summary of "Season 4 - Season 4": Anchor Bay has put out another solid, if minimal DVD set for season four, which is a shame, given the critical shift in tone the series took (with the addition of Mr. Furley, the farce machine was turned up all the way), not to mention the serious cast overhaul.
My only real complaint with the set is that the extras went suddenly limp. Other than the interview with Mrs. Ritter and Wedgeworth, the rest seems to be cut from the same interview sessions we've seen in previous sets. And don't get me started about the best-of clips. The last two sets had bloopers. This set has the same stuff we've already seen, only edited down.
I'm not a fan of the case, but there's something to be said for consistency. What's embarrassing though is the lack of commercial chapter breaks. A chapter break after each opening credits would be nice even, but the only breaks you get are between episodes, provided you selected the "play all" option.
I made a comment in the season three review that I hoped they wouldn't try to make every set the John Ritter memorial set and it seems they didn't. While Nancy Ritter does spend a considerable amount of time talking about John, it's a perspective we haven't heard before and there is genuine insight into the man. As well, Don Knotts and Suzanne Somers all receive more attention. Not enough attention, though I suspect with season five, when Somers leaves the show, the coverage for both actors will continue. Summary of "Season 3 - Season 3": If the Three's Company DVDs are tobe believed, John Ritter is the heir apparent to Jerry Lewis. And who knows, they may be right. Whatever the case, after watching the third season of Three's Company on DVD, it becomes apparent that's the line everyone involved in the show is taking. When it comes to stubbing your toe and falling butt-first into a bucket of water, nobody beats the genius of John Ritter.
I've been wondering why the Three's Company DVDs didn't have more in-depth looks at the life of Ritter. The first one was in production when he died, so no retrospective on that one. The second season set had a bit, but I assumed they might have been parceling it out over the rest of the sets. But the third set has even less than the second. Maybe more will be revealed as the cast interviews are included in future sets. But in any case I'm not sure this focus on Ritter is the best idea.
I did enjoy the interviews with Powers and Kline as they provided some of the best looks behind the scenes of one of the most popular sitcoms ever. And I'm excited that it appears we'll hear more from the cast, like Don Knotts. But I think maybe it's time to dial down the tribute to John. It can still be there, but it shouldn't be at the expense of overlooking other incredible comedy actors (like Knotts.) (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 2 - Season 2": Of all the 70s and early 80s sitcom DVD sets I've ever seen, this one definitely sets a high standard. While there are issues with the picture quality and there aren't any language tracks or subtitles (there are closed captions), not to mention the annoying lack of chapters within each episode, the disc is one of the nicest I've ever seen. Certain flourishes, like summarizing the plot of each episode within the menus (for those of use who haven't memorized each episode by title alone), not to mention the considerable amount of extra features, are super keen. Even the disc case for the four disc set is nice and handy - each disc has it's own housing, arranged in page format (no more awkward, backward flipping, double sided housings, or fold out panels), and set within a die-cut slipcase. Well done, Anchor Bay.
You get everything you see above and all the sexual innuendo and slapstick you can handle! (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 1 - Three's Company Season One": The show embodies the best (John Ritter's very funny physical comedy) and worst ("it won't reach!" "Well, try tugging on it") of situation comedy's and as such, the show runs hot and cold for me. I fondly remember watching it and I can't argue that it has a place in the TV history books, but it's pretty standard fair in many respects. Except for Janet's haircut in this first season. She was hot (or "bright" as Jack puts it)!
I love the front ends, even as simple as they are, and I like the idea of putting the episode synopsis on the same screen where you start an episode - no more fussing with the DVD insert just to figure out which episode is what. But the set features the two most annoying, well, lack of features. No "play all" option and no chapter breaks. Maybe it's just me, but after a first, nostalgic time, I can honestly do without a repeated theme song - the ability to skip it would have been nice.
Farewell Mr. Ritter. You worked your ass off and thanks to this show, you are essentially immortal. (read entire review)
