Summary of "Complete Seasons 1 & 2 - Better than the original?": I quickly realized that there were a lot of differences between the new series and the old one. That becomes evident watching the first episode; some characters are similar to the old series, some are different, and some are completely new. The all-white cast of the original is replaced by a multi-cultural cast that is probably more representative of the country now (it bothered me that in the entire 3 seasons of the first series we saw one Indian person, and one African). While I'm not 100% happy with the new series, I like the pacing of the series much more than the original. I found the original to be very, very slow, in terms of storylines, and editing. I don't have those complaints here.
I wish there were a few more extras on this set (I would have loved some commentaries), but the presentation itself is very good. I think the lack of a Dolby Digital 5.1 track on the second season was likely due to the original production, and not the fault of BBC Home Video.
You don't need to have seen the original to appreciate this set, and I'd recommend it for fans of sci-fi (though it's not really sci-fi). Check it out and let me know what you think.
