Summary of "Season 1 - FNF": Even with the popularity of Survivor, this is a show I never expected to be released on DVD. At the TV-DVD conference last October there seemed to be a consensus that reality-based game shows wouldn't sell well because once the winner is known it takes away from the series. I'd have to agree with that statement. After rewatching the first season I can't say that I derived the same thrills as I did when I first watched it. I knew who would be voted off, and I knew who was going to win. I think only the hard-core Survivor fans will buy this set.
As a set this one is all right. The commentary tracks are pure gold, and I wish they had participation from more of the cast members (or just Colleen). Speaking of Colleen...is she a goddess or what? It was funny to hear Jeff and Gervase gush over her in the commentary tracks; Jeff even called for quiet when she was speaking. Colleen, if you happen to read this, drop me an email (please). Without the bonus disc (the previously released "Greatest and Most Outrageous Moments") this set would have been slightly pathetic. The "Survivors Leave LA" and "Top Ten" features weren't very interesting, leaving us with 2 good commentary tracks and a "Look Back" featurette. The inclusion of the bonus disc gives us a lot more bonus material, and a two-hour summary of the season. If they continue to release the seasons on DVD it'll be interesting to see what they do for season three and on since they didn't release an "Outrageous" disc for them.
I'm sure a lot of people will be watching sales of this title to gauge the viability of reality-based game shows on DVD. We've seen a Big Brother season come out (season 3), but season 4 only got a "best of" release, so I'm assuming that sales of the season set weren't what they had hoped. Oops...looks like it's time to go and setup for my Survivor finale party tonight. (read entire review)
