Summary of "Season 2 - So long, kids": I loved season 1, but season 2 is pretty odd. It feels very preachy, and more like a weird "Afterschool Special" than Popular. I enjoyed seeing the two groups get along, but I missed the parents and some of the wackiness from season 1. I noticed a number of episodes were missing certain characters; it's as though each person was only contracted for 17 of the 21 episodes. Worst part of season 2; a cliffhanger episode that was never concluded because the show was canned.
I wish Ryan Murphy was interviewed for this set so he could tell us what he had planned for other seasons. The three cast members touched on this in their commentary track, but no one could know the "grand plan." I'm bummed that the show didn't go on for longer, but they had two good seasons. Summary of "Season 1 - A fun show!": I met Jamie Babbit, director of 5 season 1 episodes, and producer on the series, when I was in LA. I hadn't seen the show yet, but she told me she enjoyed working on it, and described it as a "cute and fun" series. She told me I'd probably like it, and she was right. I liked the relationship between Brooke and Sam, and how it progressed, but at times they seemed to move one step forward and two steps back. I'm glad I watched it so close to the release of season 2 because now I can jump right into the new batch of episodes.
I guess I should be thankful that this show ended because it allowed Ryan Murphy to go on and create Nip/Tuck, which is a pretty cool show as well. I was bothered for the first few episodes because I recognized Leslie Bibb, but I couldn't place her. I checked on the Internet Movie Database and realized she was in Line of Fire, a short-lived series that occupied the NYPD Blue time slot for awhile last year. She was a brunette, her natural color, which is what confused me. Too bad that show didn't go anywhere; she's very cute.
I think this is one of my favorite "teen angst" shows. It's clever, funny, and has a wonderful cast. Consider picking it up, or at least renting it. It's a little light on the bonus features, but the commentary tracks are quite good. (read entire review)
