Summary of "Season 4 (CAN) - More Fun Episodes": I have a lot of fun watching anthology shows because you never know what to expect. Sure, some are duds, but most of the episodes are great, and the list of guest stars is pretty impressive. Check out the list of guest stars in season 4: Gary Cole, Doug Savant, Dylan Walsh, Adrian Pasdar, Pat Morita, Melissa Gilbert, James Marsden, Rachael Leigh Cook, Lou Diamond Phillips, C. Thomas Howell, Amanda Tapping, Jim Byrnes, William Atherton, Cynthia Geary, Michael Shanks, David Keith, Harry Hamlin, Nicole de Boer, Robert Picardo, Rene Auberjonois, Ryan Reynolds, Ron Rifkin, Adam Baldwin, Joan Chen, Ron Perlman, Peter DeLuise, Nana Visitor and Nicholas Lea.
I look forward to watching season 5 next month (August 3), and hopefully season 6 in September, and 7 in October (those haven't been announced yet, I'm just hoping to see them). (read entire review)
Season 3 (CAN) - Aliens, Clones, and Dead Guys (Oh My!) (6/02/2010)
Summary of "Season 3 (CAN) - Aliens, Clones, and Dead Guys (Oh My!)": It still amazes (and impresses) me how quickly Alliance is burning through these seasons. Two seasons on one day followed by another season each month. At this rate we'll have the complete series out by October!
Who are the notable guest stars in season 3? They would be Jon Tenney, Natasha Henstridge, Steve Bacic, Howie Mandel, Jerry Wasserman, Kim Cattrall, Teryl Rothery, Fred Savage, Don Franklin, Casper Van Dien, Gary Basaraba, Esai Morales, Eric McCormack, Gordon Pinsent, Stephen Lang, Jason Priestley, Ron Rifkin, Ryan Reynolds, Howard Hesseman, Joshua Jackson, Kirsten Dunst, David Kaye, Catherine O'Hara, Steven Weber, Jennifer Beals, Mario Van Peebles, David McCallum, Alan Thicke and Bruce Harwood.
Summary of "Season 2 (CAN) - Ack! There's an Edit!": Take a look at the list of episode stars in the second season and you'll recognize many names from television: Michelle Forbes, Gary Jones, Heather Graham, Nick Mancuso, Dana Ashbrook, Ally Sheedy, Debrah Farentino, Mark Hamill, Matt Frewer, Ryan Phillippe, Ian Tracey, Teryl Rothery, Bruce Harwood, Robert Ito, Michael Gross, Neil Patrick Harris, Colm Feore, Jasmine Guy, Barry Pepper, Clancy Brown, Brent Spiner, Geraint Wyn Davies, Robert Patrick, Wil Wheaton, Sheena Easton, Xander Berkeley, Victor Garber, William B. Davis, Joely Fisher, Jon Cryer, Dean McDermott, David Hyde Pierce and Andrea Roth.
The fact that MGM seems to have abandoned the release of their sets should make the decision whether to buy this a lot easier to make. Just a reminder to non-Canadians, this release will play fine in your DVD player, as both Canada and the US are part of DVD region 1. This set, currently selling for just $20 on Amazon.ca, is a great deal, and worth owning, it's just a shame at least one of the episodes is edited. (read entire review)
Season 1 (CAN) - Do not adjust your set, but do buy this set (5/04/2010)
Summary of "Season 1 (CAN) - Do not adjust your set, but do buy this set": MGM owns the rights to the show in the US, and they haven't had much luck with it. They tried numerous themed collections before releasing the first season back in 2005. It didn't sell well, and nothing more was planned. Alliance has released the first two seasons of the show, surpassing MGM's releases in just one day, and they've already announced the third season for release in June!
Take a look at the list of episode stars in the first season and you'll recognize many names from television: Beau Bridges, Lloyd Bridges, William Sadler, Bruce Harwood, Tom Cavanagh, Rae Dawn Chong, Mykelti Williamson, Bruce Davison, Thora Birch, Josh Brolin, Don S. Davis, Callum Keith Rennie, Annette O'Toole, John Heard, Gregory Smith, John Savage, Rebecca De Mornay, Frank Whaley, Robert Patrick, Nicole de Boer, Peter Outerbridge, Michael Dorn, Jason London, Saul Rubinek, Alyssa Milano, Marlee Matlin, Larry Drake, Kevin McNulty, Leonard Nimoy, Cynthia Preston, Dwight Schultz, Alberta Watson, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Jones and Gordon Clapp.
It's very likely that you're a non-Canadian reading this review, so I'd like to point something out; Canada and the US are both part of region 1 when it comes to DVDs, allowing you to easily import the title from Canada and play it on your player. You'll notice this set contains French on the package, though it's predominantly English, and the menus also contain French. The French on the packaging allows you to tell your DVD-loving friends that you imported the title because it's not available in local stores. That increases the "oooh, ahhhhh" factor of your collection, and shows everyone what a true fan you are. Okay, I'm kidding about that last bit, but it really is easy to order from Amazon.ca and have the DVDs shipped to your place. The Canadian dollar has been going up and down a lot lately (at least at the time this review was posted), but it's been hovering around par. It's currently selling for $20 at Amazon.ca, and if you bundle it with season 2, you're looking at about $52 to have both seasons shipped to you in the US. Pretty good deal if you ask me.
Fans of sci-fi, or anthology shows should definitely pick up this set. It's priced amazingly low (suggested price of $26 CAN), and while the set doesn't contain any bonus material, this is roughly half the price of the MGM season 1 set (which contained some bonus material). (read entire review)
Aliens Among Us Collection - A step backwards (6/22/2005)
Summary of "Aliens Among Us Collection - A step backwards": This set has one of my favorite Outer Limits episodes - "Quality of Mercy." I remember catching that when it first aired and loving it. I think I'm twisted because shows with unhappy endings, as many of these do, make me smile. I think it's because Hollywood is based around the "happily-ever-after" story, so something that strays from that is refreshing.
I haven't seen too many companies move backwards in their TV releases, but MGM has. The 2002 releases were a good start, and I was hoping to see an improvement, but instead I find a poor quality release. No chapter after the opening of the episode - who decided to take it away when previous sets had it? And what is with the horrible audio on the featurettes? God, why do companies seem to have problems with getting dialog to come out of the center speaker? Doesn't someone listen to this and say, "hey, we have a guy on camera, but I can hear his voice coming out of the left, right, center, rear-right and rear-left speaker....maybe I should fix it!" I guess not. Either no one listened to it, or I care more about their product than they do. Either way it's pretty sad.
Hopefully Sony can influence MGM and get them to release better product. I'm not keeping my fingers crossed. (read entire review)
Summary of "Sex & Science Fiction Collection - ": I remember catching a few of these episodes when they first aired, and I enjoyed the show, though it wasn't a "must see" show for me. I watched the Canadian version, which didn't include the nudity the US versions had. I remember watching "Caught in the Act" and wondering if Alyssa Milano had filmed nude scenes, and now I know she did! Most of the episodes on the set contain nudity, which isn't surprising since it's a sex-themed release.
I prefer season sets over theme-based releases, but these are pretty good. There's a decent amount of extras, and some good episodes. Yes, there are season sets (or partial season sets) in Canada, but those are the Canadian cuts of the episodes. Maybe Sony can be convinced to release season sets now that they control the MGM library. (read entire review)
