Summary of "The Complete 4th Season - Season 4": The completist in me is happy - I now have all four seasons of Mr. Show on DVD. With The Kids in the Hall ending in 1994, Mr. Show stepped up to bat as a more than suitable replacement. Striking off in a new direction, a decidedly anti-SNL direction, Mr. Show succeeded as few others had, creating comedy that was intended to keep the audience on their toes.
With the exception of one serious omission (the previously mentioned lack of a fourth season blooper reel) the DVD set gives fans what they want - every episode they ever loved and a side helping of additional material. The DVD gives you the series, comments on the making of the series, a Bob and David appearance you might not have seen originally (I certainly hadn't seen Comic Relief 8), and what pretty much amounts to a new sketch (everyone beating the crap out of everyone else at the commentary taping). They should get bonus marks for that.
I'd grouse about there not being episode chapter breaks or a Play All option, but at this point it's all water under the bridge. Dammit. (read entire review)
Summary of "The Complete 3rd Season - Season 3": This is a great disc. Partly that's because I think it's a hilarious show, but really, it's just a solid set with only two small flaws; no chapter breaks and no option to play all. Having to go back to the front end, select an episode, then select the option of watching with or without commentary for every single episode makes for a lot of remote control hassle for an evening of comedy. Maybe I'm taking the technology for granted, but I just assume that a play all option is just a given. The lack of chapter breaks is easier to understand, as the show doesn't have the commercial in and out points that make natural chapter breaks in any other show, and the show has a very short title lead-in, so there's nothing to skip, but a full half-hour is a lot to scan through. One or two breaks in between sketches would make navigating the show a lot easier.
