Summary of "Season 4 - Mr. Monk and the 4th Season": This show is freakin' awesome, and this season has to be the best of the bunch. I love the final scene in "Mr. Monk and the Big Reward" where the captain talks about Monk being guaranteed 16 homicides a year for the next two years. It was a brilliant way to let the fans know that the show was picked up for seasons 5 and 6, with 16 episodes in each season. I thought Tony Shalhoub was awesome in "Mr. Monk Gets Drunk" as well.
If Universal invested some effort into this set (AKA commentaries, and a few more featurettes) then this could be a kickass TV-DVD set. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 3 - B-B-B-Bye Sharona": I wasn't sure how I'd like the cast change. Sharona was out, and Natalie was in. After watching the third season I'd have to say it was a good change. Sharona would baby Monk, but Natalie challenges him, and doesn't put up with some of his crap. She also maintains a more professional relationship, referring to him as "Mr. Monk" instead of "Adrian." Thumbs up for the change.
Once I start watching this show it's pretty hard to stop. I watched 2 discs on Saturday, and another two today (Sunday). I hate to admit that the weather was beautiful outside, and I was inside watching TV, but at least it was a good show (don't worry, I got out of the house both days).
Don't forget to catch the start of season 4 on July 8th. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 2 - Whodunnit?": I love detective shows, and Monk's brilliance and disorders make this a show I look forward to watching. I hoped we were going to see more bonus features on the season 2 set, but we have to make due with 4 featurettes similar to the ones found on the season 1 set; short. "The Minds Behind Monk" featurette was the most interesting, but I would rather have a commentary track, or two. I love to listen to listen to people's insight into specific episodes. Well, there's always season 3.
If you love Holmes and Watson, then you'll have to give Monk and Sharona a try. It's a serious show with a heavy dose of comedy. There's one problem with watching this show: you may realize you exhibit signs of having OCD; I know I do. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 1 - Funny!": I thought this show was hilarious. I enjoy a good whodunnit, and Monk delivers that along with a hefty dose of humor. Monk isn't a funny guy, but his actions are. Shalhoub isn't over-the-top in his portrayal of the oddities; instead he chooses to down play it to make it more believable.
This set was initially announced for a mid-January release, but then was pulled from the schedule. I'm guessing that the set was ready then, but was pulled because of the NBC/Universal deal that was going on at the time. Further evidence to support this comes from the forced trailers at the start of the first disc. Universal has a whole bunch of TV products coming out, or just released, so why would they only advertise Law & Order shows? It's probably because those were the only major releases they had at the time. Universal has also trimmed the forced trailers from their most recent TV releases; Quantum Leap and The A-Team.
One of the characters in the pilot was also in the final episode of The Dead Zone which I watched right before Monk (the actor is Vincent Gale); both were shot in Vancouver. There's also an actor (Rob LaBelle) that was in The Dead Zone,Monk and Smallville, which recently had its second season released on DVD. Then there's John Bourgeois, who played Commissioner Harry Ashcombe in "Mr. Monk and the Psychic," and appeared as Stan Olczyk in Playmakers, a show I was watching between episodes of Monk. What would Monk make of these connections?
The show is great, but the extras on here leave me wanting more. I would have liked a commentary track, at least on the pilot, and I'm sure there are funny outtakes lying around somewhere. Even with the lack of extras I think this set is worth it for people like myself that missed the show when it started. (read entire review)
