Summary of "Season 1 - It's here, it's really here!": I'll admit to being a bit disappointed with the extras on the set. The material should have been combined into one featurette with 4 titles instead of 4 separate short featurettes (the "Miami After Vice" could be separate). I hoped to see interviews with the stars, and possibly Michael Mann, but we have to make due with archival interviews. Hopefully we can see more on season 2 (crosses his fingers). Given the choice between few extras and having the music intact, I would choose the music.
It's interesting to see how Miami Vice lives on today, yet how little the stars have done since. Sure, Don Johnson had Nash Bridges, but he also had a slew of poorly performing movies at the box office, and hasn't done much in the past few years. Philip Michael Thomas hasn't faired as well as Johnson; he's appeared in a few TV movies, and worked on psychic hotline commercials. His recent success was playing the voice of "Lance Vance" in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The fictional city of "Vice City" bares a striking resemblance to Miami. Miami Vice....Vice City....get it? There's even a nod to the show in the game; when your "wanted level" increases you're chased by the police, and some of them are driving a fancy Ferrari, just like in the show!
If you've been reading my reviews over the past few years then you'll know I have a soft spot for cop shows. I love NYPD Blue, Homicide, The Wire, The Commish, and countless others, but I hadn't seen much of Miami Vice. Sure, I saw a few episodes as a kid, but a 12 year old can't truly appreciate the beauty of this show. After watching this DVD set I'm a fan of this show. I'd watch an episode of Miami Vice over NYPD Blue any day, and I've seen every episode of Blue for the last 9 years, so that says a lot. There's something about the way this show was put together; the chemistry between the characters, the cinematography, the music, and the style; it just works. Executive Producer Michael Mann was responsible for this, so I tip my hat to him.
Universal did a decent job on this set. They delivered a set without music substitutions for a show which we thought would never be released because of music costs. Sure, the print could be cleaned up a bit, and there could be better extras, but I think fans will happy they're holding the set in their hands. Now we can only hope that season 2 contains the original music as well.
If you're a fan of cop shows then you have to add this to your collection. I'm off to watch the "In the Air Tonight" scene from the pilot again. (read entire review)
