Summary of "The Complete 1st Season - Set of the year!": While I appreciate the "mystery" element to the show, I think my main interest stems from the characters, their back-stories, and how they interact with each other. I like that many of the actors are playing characters that are ethnically similar to themselves. Evangeline, a Canadian, plays one on the show, and Emilie plays an Australian. The Kim's, Koreans themselves, play a Korean couple and speak a lot of their dialog in Korean. I enjoy watching the flashbacks of their lives before the crash, and I like piecing together the various events in my head.
I think Hurley is my favorite character of the group; he acts as the heart of the group. He's kind, and funny, and we know where we, the viewers, stand with him. Locke is up there as well, but I don't trust the character. I love all the others as well, but those two are my favorites.
I know viewers were upset with the unanswered questions in the season finale, but let me take this moment to say one thing; what the heck did you think would happen?! Did you think they would wrap everything up in the last episode of the season? Hell no! They need material for season 2! Geez! Okay, sorry for that.
I'm going to put this in virtual print for all to see; this is the best DVD release of 2005. It may not become the #1 TV seller for the year (it'll be in the top 10), but this is the best TV set I've seen all year, and I've seen a hell of a lot of sets. A few people asked me what I would add to the season 2 DVD set if I were given the chance, and while I didn't have an answer for them then, I have some now. 1) I really want a featurette on the music. I think the score to this series is amazing, and I'd love to hear an interview with Michael Giacchino. Add to that a few isolated score tracks in 5.1 and I'd be in heaven. I love the music so much that I'd buy the score on CD (seriously, someone release this, please). 2) Commentary tracks on more episodes. This is a show that could use commentary on every episode. We had a handful of cast members in commentary sessions, so try to get more of them, but I'd love to hear the thoughts of the writers and producers as well. The Dead Zone has commentary for every episode, and I'd like Lost to have the same. 3) Nicknames from Sawyer. Sawyer has nicknames for everyone on the island, and this featurette could include interviews with the writers talking about how they came up with the nicknames, along with clips from the episodes. 4) A fun piece on the background actors. These people stand around, say very little, yet they must have stories. Interview a couple of them for fun, and ask them about their characters (or lack of them, since they're probably "Guy #1" and "Guy #2"). 5) More of the same. I want more interviews with the cast and crew, more behind-the-scenes footage, and more licensed stuff like Jimmy Kimmel, and the MT&R footage. It's hard to improve a set that's so damn good to begin with, so I had to think long and hard to come up with a handful of ideas.
You may be wondering why I'm doing a review of a set I've had for so long just days before the release. Honestly, I wanted my review of the set to be based on the set itself, and not the fun I had in Hawaii. Disney did a great job of the Lost event and I didn't want my time there to influence my review. Sure, I discussed part of the trip in the review, but I've stepped back from that experience and I think most of the words I've written in this review reflect the DVD set, and not the whole experience I've had. If I'm telling you to part with your hard-earned money for a DVD set then my review had better be based on the thing you're going to have on your shelf, and nothing else.
If you watched the show this past season and you're not sure about buying this release then listen to me; buy it. It's a great set, and all the cool kids are picking it up on September 6th (when in doubt use peer pressure). Seriously though, this is a show that can be rewatched, the extras are awesome, and it's the best set of the year; all very good reasons to add it to your collection. I'm going to have a long wait for the season 2 set!
Everyone involved in the creation of this set should be extremely proud. I'll be recommending this for years to come. (read entire review)
