Summary of "Key To Time: The Complete Adventure (98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103) - Sweet 16":
The 4th Doctor, played by Tom Baker, is widely accepted as the world's favorite incarnation of the character. The highly experimental "Quest For The Key To Time" series-within-a-series - where a whole season was dedicated to one overall goal - is considered by many to be the epitome of the Tom Baker years. After viewing these episodes in their original form, and seeing much of them for the very first time, I must agree that this is Doctor Who at the top of its form.

With that in mind, it's a pity that the Region 1 DVD release wasn't also at the top of its form. I would have cheerfully waited another year to be able to get this at a quality level similar to "Ark In Space", and the other previous releases. I suspect many Doctor Who fans would agree.

On the other hand, I doubt that an upgrade is even potentially in the offing. This is probably IT, for better or for worse. I suspect sales on these discs - both individually and in the set - won't be quite as brisk as BBCAmerica and Warner hopes they would be. Especially when word of mouth gets around; Doctor Who fans talk almost as much as Star Trek fans do.

On the third hand, fans are fans, and they really do want to own this storyline. And it's in decent shape, just not top-notch shape. The biggest obstacle I see is that the pricing on this set is similar to that of the higher-quality releases: $19.99 to $24.99 for the separate DVDs, and $99.99 to $124.99 for the gift set (which amounts to "buy five, get the sixth free"). If I had to make a buying decision for these discs based on what I know now, I'd be much more willing to pay around $12.99 to $14.99 for each of these, or $65-$75 for the set. On a price-and-performance basis, that would be more equitable, I think. After all, if you're going to rush these out to the fans on a more mass-market basis, a mass-market price should be a consideration.

This may be the route that the Doctor Who home video releases end up taking in the long run. After all, there are 160 total serials to get through, and that could take a lot of - ahem - time indeed! (read entire review)

Summary of "Story #076: The Ark In Space - Who Is It This Time?":

"The Ark In Space" is a very popular story, from early in the career of the very popular Fourth Doctor. The weekly installments earned average ratings of 11 million British viewers, and the second installment was ranked 5th in the weekly listings. It did an outstanding job of integrating the new team of Doctor and Companions, and setting them on the road to further adventures.

I cannot honestly claim, though, that I enjoyed this 4-part story as much as I did other Doctor Who releases on DVD, such as the "Tomb of the Cybermen" disc released on the same day as "Ark In Space". But, it is not my place to review the stories, as much as it is to review the DVDs themselves. Most of you reading this will have already seen "Ark", or are fans of "Doctor Who" in general, and are just wondering if this is a solid DVD.

It most certainly is! This is just about the most solid across-the-board television DVD I have ever run across. The people who produced this disc could teach Hollywood a thing or two about Special Editions. It excels on every level you can think of, and is well worth the asking price you will find in most stores and e-tailers. If you are a curious person, thinking about trying Doctor Who, and are wondering about which is the best story to start on, perhaps I should recommend the "Tomb of the Cybermen" DVD I keep mentioning – another disc that lives up to high standards. It might maybe be a better place to start, as I consider it a more enjoyable story from earlier in the mythos (much earlier; it's black-and-white). But I don't want to take anything away from "Ark" with these comments. It is a fan favorite serial; an enjoyable story with a poignant ending...and the DVD that represents this adventure is certainly packed to please!

Summary of "Story #037: The Tomb Of The Cybermen - Look What They Dug Up!":
I don't know what else to say about this DVD. I think I've said it all as I went: great story, an awesomely restored video presentation, near-perfect audio, and more supplements than a 35-year-old feature has a right to provide.

I have been a Doctor Who fan since my teenage days, when I wasn't able to catch enough of the show due to the local PBS station's erratic scheduling of the program. I often saw the later Doctors, especially Tom Baker, and didn't get a chance to appreciate Patrick Troughton's work like I should have. In this serial I can see his charm shine through.

I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. In fact, I've enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed most other discs in my rather immense collection. Somewhere in one of the supplements on this disc - there are so many I lost track of where this was said - someone commented that this feature was a better production than most films, and made at a fraction of the cost. I have to agree with that. I can now understand the near-mythological status that this particular episode achieved, and the reasons for the sheer joy that fans expressed upon its recovery from Hong Kong. This is a super show, highly entertaining...not just for any science fiction buff, but for anyone, period.
