Summary of "The Complete 1st Season - A good killer?": Uh oh, Showtime really messed up the bonus material on this set. A bunch of the material is available as DVD-ROM content, but there's NOTHING on the packaging that indicates this, or the fact that you need a PC to view it; you can't view the content on a Mac or Linux machine. I wasn't expecting to download the episode of The Tudors (Showtime even blocks Canadians from accessing their website), but I expected to find the two chapters of Dexter in the Dark as PDFs on the DVD-ROM, but they aren't there. What happened to "The Academy of Blood - A Killer Course"? I'm guessing that's buried on the DVD-ROM as well. Showtime, you MUST indicate whether material is only accessible via DVD-ROM on the package, or you'll have pissed off customers (I've already heard from some of them).
I think it's funny that 5 out of the 7 main actors have appeared on HBO shows as significant characters. Of course Michael C. Hall played David on Six Feet Under, but James Remar appeared as Richard in Sex and the City, while Lauren Velez, Erik King and David Zayas all appeared on Oz. I wonder whether Showtime deliberately went after HBO actors, or it was just a coincidence (most likely a coincidence).
It bothers me that Showtime seems to do half-assed jobs on their DVDs. My reviews seem to contain some praise, along with a paragraph about what they messed up. I enjoyed the "Witnessed in Blood" featurette, and the commentary tracks, but I'm pissed that I couldn't access everything on the set, especially when there's NO indication that some of the material is only accessible via DVD-ROM.
Dexter is a great series, and worth owning on DVD. If you have a PC at home with a DVD-ROM drive you'll get more out of this set than others will. (read entire review)
