Summary of "Season 2 - Dead Show": So, what the hell happened to Dead Like Me airing on Showtime? How could a popular show get cut down in its prime? I got an explanation from a nameless person who was very connected at Showtime; Showtime wanted a hit like HBO's The Sopranos. They figured by axing Dead Like Me, a popular, but expensive show on their network, they could free up enough money to create two new shows in the hopes that one of them would become a stellar hit. While Dead Like Me did very well for the network, they wanted something more popular. This is how the networks think, and it sucks. They killed a brilliant show in favor of something else, and it sucks! Fans had hopes that MGM would be able to shop the show around to another network, but no one picked it up, and it's as dead as the reaper stars. How sad.
The extras on this set were better than the first, though there weren't many of them. I was hoping for some kind of commentary track, or interview talking about the cancellation of the show, but there isn't anything like that here. The menus look nice, but they're functionality is crippling. It shouldn't take three-clicks of the "Enter" button to start an episode of a show; the first screen is a complete waste of space on the first three discs. I don't understand why they couldn't have included the fourth disc extras on the same screen as the 3 episodes.
I'm sad we won't see a third season of the series, or that the extras on these sets are rather sad, but the entire run of the show is out now. I guess I can pick up another show to watch now. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 1 - Lame extras!": I love this show, but the special features on this set are absolutely pathetic! The only thing of substance is the commentary track for the pilot, and that's it. The "behind-the-scenes" is made up of some quick interview clips with filler from the show, and "The Music of Dead Like Me" is a joke! They only talk about the music for 20-30 seconds, and the featurette is filled with music that isn't even in the show. Sorry, but I don't remember the theme from American Beauty showing up in an episode. Did they actually pay money to license this song for the DVD set? Everything else is filler crap, except for the "Deleted Scenes," but they managed to screw that up by placing the "play all" at the end of the clips. Geez you guys, how about thinking these things through! This is a show that's currently in production and this is all we get? Sorry, but as a fan of the series I feel really short-changed. The beauty of TV-on-DVD is the possibility for extras to enhance the episodes, but I feel as though the extras on this set are only there to score bullets on the back of the box.
Sorry for that rant, but extras designed to score points on the box really, really tick me off. Now, with that out of the way I'd like to tell you that these episodes, and presentation on the set, are extremely good. The video and audio are top-notch, it's just the extras that are pathetic. Until MGM makes some changes they will continue to release sub-par sets of good shows. (read entire review)
