Summary of "The Complete 1st Season - Abed rocks!": I was really happy to discover this is a single-camera comedy, not a sitcom. I don't like being told when to laugh, and I find that many sitcoms write their jokes to get the big laugh, not the little snicker, and it's often the snickers I like the most. At first I found the show funny, but not hilarious, however that changed further along in the season. The characters all have their little quirks, some more than others, and I appreciated that the writers never took it too far with any of them. Pierce could become annoying, Abed could become totally insane, and Britta could become overbearing, but they never did because the writers knew when to reel them in. I think Abed was my favorite character, simply because of the way he viewed the world; as an episode of a TV show, or a movie. It's wonderful because it allows the writers the ability to comment, through Abed's dialog, on how a scene relates to a movie, so the viewer is left with the idea that the show is paying homage to the show or movie instead of ripping it off. Brilliant!
I commented that the show started a little slow for me, and I thought maybe the characters needed time to develop. After re-watching the first 6 episodes I discovered it wasn't a problem with the characters at all, as they were fully developed right from the pilot, I just needed time to understand them. Those first episodes I re-watched were funnier the second time, most likely because I already knew the characters. Try re-watching some episodes for yourself and see if they're funnier the second time around.
Sony isn't really known for loading their sets with extras, but they've done a great job with this one. Commentary on every episode, tons of outtakes, mini-episodes, and some funny behind-the-scenes material will make fans of this show smile. If you haven't already, go out and pick this one up.
