Summary of "Season 4 - Season 4": I always suspected that there would be a pacing issue in DVDs for long-running TV series and I think M*A*S*H may have hit the right balance - no frills that will increase cost. Paramount on the other hand opted to put extras on their Cheers and Fraiser sets, only to run out of steam after the third season. The only question now is if they're saving anything for the end of the series. Paramount already released their Frasier final season set with extras. And given the media hoopla that surrounded the end of Cheers, there will surely be material available for the last season set in Cheers. But for now, no soup for you! Oh, I'm sorry, I'm mixing up my shows there. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 3 - Season 3": If you're looking for a way to watch the show when you want to watch it, rather than wait for it to come on TV, then here you are. If you're looking for improved quality, I'll allow that the disc is more consistent than what' s on TV, but that small boon is eclipsed by some awful source material. And if you're looking for anything that gives you an under-the-hood look at how one of America's most famous shows was put together, forget it. You'll learn more from the various cheers websites online than you'll learn from this DVD set. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 2 - Season 2": There isn't much to say about the set - Paramount continues to include the features I most like to see (such as chapter breaks at commercial breaks), remove the ones I hated (the always weak trivia games), and then add a few I absolutely love (gag reel). My only regret is that the time and money wasn't there for more commentary tracks. Maybe, with luck, the creators and cast can add some commentary tracks to future season sets, if only to the award winning episodes, if nothing else. (read entire review)
Summary of "Season 1 - Season 1": While not a pristine example of TV on DVD, the Cheers first season set is pretty darn good. With 22 episodes over four discs, this is an excellent way to get reacquainted with the show. In particular, I noticed two things; one that surprised me and one that made me very happy. The latter is that Paramount has chapter breaks set for every commercial break, something I'm hoping to see in more season sets (particularly anything put out by Columbia-Tristar).
The former is that the series pilot is a dead giveaway that the creators knew they had a hit on their hands - a lot of times you'll see a small difference in quality between a pilot episode and the rest of the series, but in this case the first episode is, quality wise, at the same level as the other 21 episodes. It could be because of the Spartan and simple concept. Or maybe they just had bags of money. I'm kidding, it's the nature of the show - one set, comprised largely of glasses and bar tables means even a small pilot budget can go a long way. Now, if only I can get that damn theme out of my head... (read entire review)
