Summary of "Book 2: Earth, Volume 2 - The comentaries are back!": Woohoo! Those stupid animatics have been replaced with two commentary tracks for this release, which makes me very happy. I used to study a form of Kung Fu, and it's very interesting to listen to Konietzko and DiMartino talk about the various styles they use in the series.
Something very weird happened while I watched this disc; my girlfriend watched it with me. She has absolutely no interest in cartoons or comic books, so I was surprised when she wanted me to start another episode, then another, and another, and then she was pissed off when "The Library" ended. There's something about this cartoon that appeals to kids, teens, adults, and cartoon-hating girlfriends; it's that good. The true test of the show will be whether she asks me when I'm getting Season 2 volume 3 (it comes out on May 22). (read entire review)
Book 2: Earth, Volume 1 - It's all about the Earth (1/23/2007)
Summary of "Book 2: Earth, Volume 1 - It's all about the Earth": I've missed my little arrow-headed friend, so I was happy that they're giving us 5 episodes on these volumes instead of 4, and they haven't raised the price. I had hoped for more extras though; I find animatics completely useless, and would have preferred some commentary tracks like they had on the fifth volume from season 1. (read entire review)
Book 1: Water, Volume 5 - Finally! The end of season 1 (9/29/2006)
Summary of "Book 1: Water, Volume 5 - Finally! The end of season 1": This was the first year I went to the San Diego Comic Con, and I had a lot of fun there. One of the main reasons I went was to attend The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. panel, and I quickly realized that I had to get to panels before the panel I wanted to see, due to the huge crowds and limited seating. So I looked in the book and saw that the panel before Brisco was a short one - it was Avatar, with a general Nickelodeon panel right before that. I decided that both panels would be interesting, so I went and lined up. I had no idea the popularity of Avatar! The line was huge, and I wasn't very close to the front of it. I spoke with some other Avatar fans and asked them what they liked about the series. Everyone loved the characters, and the writing, and they all appreciated the detail in the martial arts, and the continuing story. One thing became clear to me; Avatar will be around for a few years. Some fans I spoke to were ticked that there was a boxed set being released, but others were happy because they didn't own any of the volumes and would just pick up the set. The panel was very interesting, though the fans didn't leave fast enough, and the Brisco panel was delayed.
I was very happy to finish the first season of Avatar; it's been a long wait! Hopefully season 2 is released in one set instead of the individual volumes... I guess we'll have to wait and see what they do. (read entire review)
Book 1: Water, Volume 4 - A season set is coming! (7/05/2006)
Summary of "Book 1: Water, Volume 3 - Ang is awesome": Ah, another 4 great Avatar episodes arrive on DVD. I'm enjoying the journey that Ang and his friends are on, and the good storytelling of the writers. It's an easy show to get into, and should appeal to viewers of all ages. It seems so common to have adults voicing the roles of children, so I was surprised to see so many young faces in the cast; very cool.
If you haven't started this series yet then what are you waiting for (possibly a season set...?)? (read entire review)
Summary of "Book 1: Water, Volume 2 - Go Aang!": I really enjoy this series, but a season release would be much better than these volumes containing 4 episodes. There's a nice narrative to the series, and it's painful to wait a few months between releases; a season set would make sense for this show.
I think this show strikes a nice balance between comedy, action and drama, so it's a show that should appeal to adults and kids. The humor doesn't get carried away like so many anime shows. It's worth checking out if you haven't seen it already. (read entire review)
