Summary of "The Complete 5th Season - It's Smile Time!": It's all over now. 110 episodes is a good run for a series, and Angel had some wonderful episodes in there. I thought the run to the end was very well done, and I enjoyed the various paths the characters took. The final episode was both exciting and sad, and I thought the final scene was great.
I had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain during a visit to The Shield offices in October. The writing team landed over at The Shield after the show was cancelled, and they both looked happy to be there. Shawn Ryan, the creator of The Shield, worked on the first few seasons of Angel. They're both extremely nice, and mentioned that they had recorded the commentary for this set. Maybe it's because I had met them, but I thought their commentary track was one of the better ones for the set.
I find it's better to have a show finish before you want it to, because the alternative seems to be running a show into the ground. Angel went out with dignity, and the team went out swinging. (read entire review)
The Complete 4th Season - Best Season! (8/23/2004)
Summary of "The Complete 4th Season - Best Season!": Now that the show is over it's a bit hard to watch some of these old episodes because the outcome of the series is known. Like I said earlier, I think this is probably the best season of the series. Everything came together nicely during the season, and this set is great. Fox has given us 7 commentary tracks, a wonderful overview of the season (remember to watch this before season 5), outtakes and featurettes. This is a great set, and one I'm sure many of you are itching to pick up when it's released. (read entire review)
Summary of "The Complete 3rd Season - Daddy!": There were many twists and turns in season 3 of Angel, and this season set up many events for the fourth season. Two of the featurettes surprised me; "Season 3 Overview" and "Page to Screen." Judging them by their titles I expected them to be much shorter and less interesting, but they're both well-produced looks at different aspects of the show. So much work goes into these episodes in such a short period of time and it's nice to see some of that work captured on these DVDs.
Last October when I was in LA I walked past the Angel stages and saw the cast trailers, and one of the actors sitting on the step outside. Although I didn't get to see them film, it's exciting being that close to the action, and it's also a bit freaky to see an actor standing outside in the sun wearing vampire makeup! The Complete 1st Season - Mmm....Cordelia (2/24/2003)
Summary of "The Complete 1st Season - Mmm....Cordelia": I really like this show, maybe even a bit more than I like Buffy. The mood is a bit darker, and none of the characters annoy me. I was rather sad that Doyle was killed off early in the season. I really enjoyed Glenn Quinn in "Covington Cross" and I was very saddened by the news of his death due to a drug overdose in early December.
The first season of Angel had many cast changes yet it never lost its focus. I'd recommend this set for any fan of the show, and a definite rental for those that haven't seen it before. (read entire review)
