When Will Farrell left Saturday Night Live in May, 2002, he left as the highest paid actor in the history of the show, earing over $350,000 for a season. It was Farrell's impersonations of Alex Trebek, Jesse Ventura, Charlton Heston, Mark McGwire, and George W. Bush that fans will remember him for, but he also had a slew of other characters. Who could forget Craig, the Spartan Cheerleader, or Steve, one of the Roxbury guys and the star of 1998s "A Night at the Roxbury".
There's no doubt about it; Will Farrell is one of the funniest guys that have appeared on Saturday Night Live, so it's fitting that Lions Gate Home Entertainment and NBC Enterprises would release Saturday Night Live: The Best of Will Farrell.
Well, not much to complain about here. Generally, Saturday Night Live is shot on video in front of a studio audience. Every once and awhile there will be a filmed piece, usually a commercial for a fake product. The master tapes must be in excellent condition, because I can't find a fault in them at all. In fact, the only fault in the video is some minor edge enhancement found in some scenes. This is a great looking DVD.
With the show being shot live, on stage, expectations for the audio have to be lowered somewhat. We get a 2.0 Dolby Stereo mix on this release, and while the dialog and music are clean, it's not all that exciting. The center channel is obviously dominant, with the other speakers providing a sound effect here and there, or music and the laughing of the crowd. There aren't any subtitles on this release, but it's closed captioned.
Will performs some skits. Apparently someone thought they were funny enough to give him a job, but I didn't find them so hot.

9 photos of Will are shown as music plays.
Dress Sketch (6:14)
After the dress rehearsal, sketches are cut because the show is too long. This one features Farrell as a gold prospector accompanying troops destined to fight in Afghanistan.
Probably the best extra on the set, watch as Will and others lose it during the skits.
TV-Conan 1 (7:29)
Farrell spends the entire interview as Robert Goulet.
TV-Conan 2 (9:14)
Will bares himself to Conan and poor Andy. Poor, poor Andy.
I really enjoyed this disc. Not only are there some hilarious skits with Will Farrell, but he also has some excellent guest stars. Christopher Walken, Seann William Scott, Charlie Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, Drew Barrymore, Jim Carrey, Lucy Lawless and Sara Michelle Gellar can be found in the skits. My favorite extra was the "Outtakes" where Will and others try to keep it together while performing their skit; good stuff!
This release reminded me of something; I need to go and pick up Will Farrell's Old School on DVD. Fans of Farrell will dig this release from Lions Gate Home Entertainment.
