Puck...what a freak!
by Gord Lacey (All reviews)
6/03/2002

Before "Big Brother" there was another reality series where people went and lived in a house while cameras filmed them. Unlike "Big Brother", the cast of "Real World" can leave the house, have people over and lead "regular" lives. This disc takes some of the moments from the first 10 seasons of the show and packages it up into a 46 min presentation that's hosted by Puck, the sickest cast member ever. When I watched "Real World: San Francisco" I was repulsed by this guy and cheered when he was voted out of the house and replaced by the lovely Jo. Puck chats with people about their favorite "Real World" moments, or gets them to share their own experiences as lead-ins to the "bloopers".

Video

"Real World" has always been shot on video, so any problems inherent with film (dust, sractches) aren't found here, although there is a little bit of video noise. Some of Puck's video segments were uneven, but the "Real World" footage was fine for the most part. There were a few glitches, but nothing major or distracting. There are 10 chapters for the DVD; "Opening," "Bodily Functions," "Fan Favorites," "Gettin' Nekkid," "The Confessional," "Bored," "Embarrassing The Real World," "The Crew, "The Talent Show" and "Closing".

Audio

"Real World: A Decade of Bloopers" contains a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track. While it isn't impressive, the track is suitable for a "documentary" show like "Real World". As with other "Real World" releases, the dialog comes from the front speaker while music can be heard from the left and right speakers as well as the rears. A bit of the dialog has been censored with the BEEP, BEEP, BEEPs, but not all of it. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that they didn't have the original BEEP-free tracks for some of the older material, or the BEEP-free dialog on the DVD was stuff that wasn't aired.

Summary

After watching this disc I came to the conclusion that it's poorly titled. I think a better title would have been "Real World: Reflecting on a Decade." I was expecting this to be laugh-out-loud funny, but I was mildly amused with the "OnStar" segment and the cat that ran under a women's coat. Oh, and Puck's hair is just horrible. If you're a partial "Real World" fan and even slightly enjoyed "Real World: Chicago" I'd recommend that disc over this one. 46 mins is too short when you're showing clips from 10 different seasons of a series. This should have been double the time. This is all just my opinion though, but I'd suggest a rental.
