Babies, big!
by Gord Lacey (All reviews)
8/25/2003

It started as a special episode ("All Growed Up") for the show's 10th anniversary and has now become its own show. All Grown Up! follows the adventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Kimi, Susie, Dil and Angelica 10 years after the original series.

Don't be surprised if you haven't heard of this show; it hasn't even aired yet. As with some of the previous Nick DVD releases, this volume contains episodes that haven't aired yet. "Coup DeVille" was shown in April as a preview, but the first episode, "Susie Sings The Blues" hasn't been seen before.

Join the former babies as they take on the pre-teen years on DVD, then catch the show when it airs in November on Nickelodeon. This DVD also includes two Rugrats episodes: the "All Growed Up" special and "My Fair Babies."

Video

Animation can either look really good, or really bad on DVD. The solid colors can reveal poor compression and edge enhancement. This DVD is perfect. The colors are solid, there isn't any edge enhancement and the picture on this DVD is awesome.

Audio

"Growing Up Changes Everything" contains an English surround audio track. While the release contains some fairly good audio, the rear speakers are hardly used. The center channel is used for most of the voices with the occasional directional effect coming from the left or right speakers. There aren't any subtitles, but the episodes are closed captioned.

Previews of "SpongeBob Squarepants," "The Wild Thornberrys Movie," "The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius" and "Tak & The Power of Juju" video game.

Summary

I really liked this show. As much as I like the babies, it's great to see the same characters 10 years older. They're the same, but they don't talk like...well...babies. Nick DVD has the right idea by releasing unseen episodes on DVD before they air.

Fans of Rugrats will want to check this disc out.
