The Gilmores Rock!
by Gord Lacey (All reviews)
3/09/2005

Lorelai Gilmore was only 16 when she had her daughter Lorelai (she goes by Rory though). Their relationship is more like best friends than mother/daughter. They hang out together, talk to each other and go for coffee with each other. Lorelai is forced to ask her parents for money when Rory is accepted into a private school. They agree, but only if they meet on Fridays for a family dinner. The dinners provide much of the humor and conflict in the series; Lorelai doesn't get along very well with her controlling mother.

The second season of this show is just as cute and fun as the first. Lorelai is in love with Max, and Rory is in love with Dean. Luke's nephew comes to live with him, and manages to turn Stars Hallow upside down. Paris isn't a complete she-devil this season; there may be hope for her yet. This DVD set contains all 22 episodes of the series, as well as a booklet with episode descriptions.

Video

Presented in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1, Gilmore Girls looks fairly good on DVD. The transfer contains a bit of grain and noise here and there, and looks slightly soft at times. I'm not a fan of the theme song, so I was happy that Warner Bros placed a chapter right after the opening so I could skip over it. Each disc contains a "play all" feature.

Audio

I'm usually disappointed when a DVD contains a stereo mix, but after watching the first season I don't think a surround track would be appropriate. The voices come across nice and clear, which is needed when they talk as fast as they do on this show! There are a few directional effects in the episodes, but they're few and far between. The music is intact as well; kudos to Warner Bros. The episodes are subtitled in English, French and Spanish, as well as being closed captioned.

Film By Kirk (1:53)
Kirk's horribly wonderful short film that the town saw on movie night. It's a bit quiet.

Gilmore Goodies and Gossip (43:01)
A feature carried over from season 1, this is an episode of the show ("A-Tisket, A-Tasket") with popup trivia. I wish they had this on every episode of the show; there are so many references to TV shows, movies, plays, music, and books that it can be hard to know them all.

International Success (5:26)
Amy Sherman-Palladino (creator/executive producer/writer), Natania Meeker (professor of French), Patricia Miller (professor of Italian) and Glenn Levine (assistant professor of German) talk about some of the changes that have to be made to the show when it's translated to other countries.

Who Wants to Argue (1:11)
Snippets from some of the arguments in season 2.

Gilmore-isms (16 pages)
This 16 page book includes information on many of the cultural references the characters make in season 2. I hope they continue releasing one of these with every season, and maybe go back and make a booklet for season 1.

Summary

I love this show. Yes, that's right, I'm a 27 year old guy, and I love Gilmore Girls. It's not a sappy make-me-barf show; it's witty, with quick dialog and an insane number of references to books, theater, music, TV and movies. There were two notable guest appearances in season 2, at least for me. Bryce Johnson appeared in episode 9, and I had just finished watching him in Popular, a WB show that premiered in 1999. Then there's Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) who was hilarious in episode 21. This was his first live-action appearance, and he's back for another episode in season 3 (they obviously liked him).

Pick up this show; it's fun, and cute, and I can't say that about many shows on TV these days.
