I Hope This School Doesn't Close
by Gord Lacey (All reviews)
8/14/2012

America's most incorrigible study group of misfits returns for a hilariously ingenious new year at Greendale College. From homicidal Halloween pizza parties, holiday Glee Club smackdowns, foosball showdowns, epic pillow fight wars and an underage campus security force to a shocking remarriage, a riotous funeral service, submarine sandwich throwdowns, a new Vice Dean (Emmy winner John Goodman) with a strange air-conditioning fixation and a crime show homage for the ages - The Third Season of television's boldest, brashest comedy is the most brilliant yet. Get ready to cram it all in.
Ohhhh Community, how I love you! This is definitely a "DVD Show" for me, as I like to devour the series a disc as a time, not a single episode a week spread over months and months. Where's the fun in that? I was blown away when I watched the first season, and I loved the second; can the third match the awesomeness of the previous seasons? Most likely...

This 3-disc set includes all 22 episodes from the third season:

Video

Community looks fairly good on DVD, with an Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) presentation. The picture quality looks great, without an obvious noise in the picture, and only a few scenes where the black level is a little bit off. There are chapters after the opening of each episode, and a "play all" option.

Audio

The set includes an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track, which sounds good, and the many popular songs used in the episodes remain intact on the set. The rear speakers are used for ambient effects, with the dialog occupying the center speaker, and the two front speakers used for most of the sound effects. There are English subtitles, and English SDH subtitles, available on the episodes (and some of the bonus material).

Extras - How we rate extras

Commentary Tracks While I didn't have a chance to listen to all these commentary tracks, I love that every episode has one. It seems like whenever there are a handful of commentaries on a set, there's never one on the episode I would love to hear someone talk about; this solves that problem.

Summary

I love this show, and I really hope the quality is maintained for the next season. In case you've been living in a bubble, you're probably aware that Dan Harmon, the creator of the show, was... let go... earlier this year. Sony and NBC are bringing in some new showrunners, and everyone wonders if this is the last time we'll be watching the show we love, and whether major changes will be made next year in order to make it "more accessible" (insert scream here). I guess the good news for people like me is that I'll know what to expect before the DVDs ever come out; if it's bad news then I just won't be as excited for the release, that's all.

Sony has, once again, done a wonderful job with this set. I love having commentary on every episode in the season, the outtakes are funny, the deleted scenes are okay, and the two featurettes they created are great. It's a show that obviously gets a lot of love from the home video department, and I hope that continues into the next season as well.
