Please note: On 1/12/2005 we were notified by MGM that the information in this news item is incorrect; the show isn't coming to DVD in 2005 as TVGuide.com reported.
Every Wednesday (holidays aside!) at TVGuide.com, the official website of
TV Guide magazine, you can find a new installment of the "Ask Ausiello" column, where
TV Guide's Michael Ausiello answers your questions about TV Shows.
This week's installment noted some very neat TV-on-DVD info, and reader Laura Beatham was the first one to spot it and give us the heads-up (thank you so much!). On the 18th question down you see the following question-and-answer exchange (emphasis on the timeframe is ours):
Question: Do you think they will ever put thirtysomething on DVD? - John M.
Ausiello: Look for the first season to hit stores in September. In the meantime, pick up the new issue of TV Guide magazine for scoop on a thirtysomething reunion taking place on the big screen.
Nice! And we'll be looking at the "reunion" info, too. But here's something to keep in mind about that DVD timetable: to the best of our knowledge, MGM owns that property. The studio with the lion ought to still be working independently of Sony up until the time Sony's buyout of MGM is finalized. When is that? This morning's (Jan. 7th) print edition of
Variety states that the Justice Dept. has approved the aquisition, the MGM stockholders have approved, and that the merger ought to be completed by mid-Summer 2005 (pending overseas approval and "standard closing conditions", etc.). Since the target timeframe that
TVGuide mentions for
thirtysomething getting released on DVD occurs after that, we wonder if it will affect the planned release schedule at all.
At this point we just don't know, but stay tuned and we'll keep you informed as developments come to light. We're just very very pleased that this one is on the drawing boards!
