In 1979 Young Maverick hit the trail on CBS, starring Charles Frank as "Ben Maverick". Ben was the son of Beau Maverick, played by a pre-007 Roger Moore later in the run of the original 1957 Maverick Series. Beau was the British cousin to Bret (James Garner), Bart (Jack Kelly) and Brent (Roger Colbert), so in the new show "Uncle" Bret (Garner) shows up briefly in the first episode to help kick things off.
The year prior, though, in 1978 we had Bret and Bart taking Harvard drop-out Ben on his very first adventure in a telefilm called The New Maverick, where they taught him "the tricks of the trade". That telefilm ended up serving as the pilot for Young Maverick. When the new show didn't last more than eight episodes, NBC brought back Garner himself in 1981's Bret Maverick. So many fans say that The New Maverick served as a pilot of sorts for that show as well.
Warner Home Video has announced this morning that The New Maverick - starring James Garner, Jack Kelly, Charles Frank and Susan Blanchard (real-life wife to Charles Frank) - will come to DVD on May 20th. This single-disc release will cost $14.97 SRP, and should make a good gift for Father's Day (at least that's what Warner hopes). Stay tuned for box art just as soon as we get it!
