It's been a year-and-a-half since our last update on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles on DVD. That update firmly tied the launch of the DVDs to the theatrical release of the fourth Indiana Jones film. Well, with the filming of that movie scheduled to begin in June, for a planned May 22nd 2008 box office debut, it's about time to revisit our TV-DVDs, isn't it?
Well, no less a personage that George Lucas himself spoke out on this subject this past weekend at the Paley Television Festival at the Museum of Television and Radio. The guys over at IGN covered the event, and you can head over there for full details. Our thanks to reader

According to the IGN article, "during the event Lucas said DVDs of the series are finally on the way". Apparently one of the obstacles in the early days of Lucas wanting to get this series done on DVD were management regimes at Paramount that didn't believe the series would sell on this format, especially in the early days when the studio didn't have a lot of faith in DVDs in general. We're certainly past all of that now, aren't we? The DVDs are definitely coming, and Lucas didn't say anything to contradict the previous "schedule" of a release tie-in with the upcoming new film. IGN's story also had this to say about the content of the discs:
The DVDs will include the reedited versions of the series previously available on VHS, which took the 44 episodes of the show and turned them into 22, 90 minute, feature length stories. Lucas conceived of doing this very early on, and when the series first wrapped production, shot footage that would help link the episodes more cohesively.
Lucas mentioned how the series was shot on 16mm, which allowed more money to be spent on the production and allow for longer shooting schedules than it would have otherwise had. However, he said, "we're in the process of enhancing and cleaning up [the picture] for DVD." Having mentioned the cost constraints the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was under, he also humorously stated, "We're spending more to clean things up then we did to shoot it."
