The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles - Exclusive Guide to Episodes & Historical Documentaries on Volume 3, Plus a Peek at the Timeline Screen!

A 3-Part Special Report Posting over the Weekend of Sept. 21st-23rd

Posted by David Lambert
Always in the right place at the right time - or the wrong place at the wrong time, depending on your perspective - Indiana Jones came of age during the transformative first two decades of the 20th century. Along the way, he met many of the key historical figures who helped to shape the generations that followed. From ideological leaders to pioneers in art and science, young Indy saw the rise and fall of some of history’s greatest luminaries and most fearsome despots.

Eschewing the clinical, by-the-numbers method of teaching history, creator George Lucas used Indy's fictional adventures to put a human face on the past. He sought to introduce audiences to real-life people and events organically, through the eyes of an identifiable - and quintessentially human - guide. Pairing him with - or pitting him against - notable figures from an era that heralded the modern age and ushered in the 20th century, Indy's adventures introduced audiences firsthand to the architects of history itself.

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles - Volume 3 comes to DVD in Spring, 2008, the third of 3 volumes with all 22 "chapters" of the early adventures of the man with the hat. These feature-length editions are based on the 44 episodes of the 1992-96 Emmy-winning television series starring Corey Carrier as Indy when aged between 8 and 10, and Sean Patrick Flanery as Indy when aged 16 through 20. The third and last volume contains 7 episodes, 31 companion historical documentaries, an Interactive DVD Timeline and other extras not yet revealed. The first DVD volume of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles arrives on October 23rd, and the second volume has recently been confirmed for December 18th, in a run-up to the May 22, 2008 box-office debut of the long-awaited fourth Harrison Ford film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Look for TVShowsOnDVD's separate stories on Volume 1 and Volume 2, which have already been posted with details and pictures for those releases. Today, we conclude with a look at the stories and historical documentaries planned for the Volume 3 release next Spring. Since cover art isn't available yet, we instead have an additional word from the studio about the Companion Historical Documentaries, and the man behind them. Just below that we have a sneak preview (sorry, only in black and white) of the Interactive DVD Timeline on all three volumes, followed by the details of the third volume's episodes and documentaries. At the very bottom are pictures taken from chapters contained on the third volume, as a more grown-up Indy moves further and further toward the legend we see in the films!
In November, 2002, David Schneider was named Head of Documentaries at JAK Films (the production arm of Lucasfilm) and asked to spearhead the creation of non-fiction historical documentaries to accompany The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones episodes on DVD. Over the next four and a half years, his unit produced 94 documentaries, three historical overviews and an interactive timeline covering many of the most important people and events of the early 20th century.

Pursued by a dangerous oneeyed man, Indy follows the trail of the diamond from London to Alexandria to the South Seas where he has a run-in with a murderous band of Chinese pirates. The shipboard battle that ensues is a spectacular display of swords, guns and flying fists. Composer George Gershwin accompanies Indy in his adventures as he attempts to ensure that the show goes on despite temperamental stars, malfunctioning props and the fact that he's dating three very different women at the same time. Though battered by the film industry, Indy decides to give it one more chance and goes on a location shoot with legendary director John Ford. Ford and his cronies, including aging gunman Wyatt Earp, help him to see the magic of movies and moviemaking, and when an actor is accidentally killed, Indy pitches in to save the film.
