Yes, you read that right, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the release of two volumes of
X-Men for release on
April 28, 2009. Details are scarce right now, but we can tell you that each of the 2-disc sets will retail for $23.99; no word on the number of episodes contained on each set.
Disney mentions this is the second-most requested animated series yet to be released on DVD, and
references Wikipedia as the source of the information (guess they didn't realize
Wikipedia references US as their source!), so lots of fans will be excited by this news. The release is timed to take advantage of
X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which should be out this summer. Apparently the rumors of Disney not owning the rights to the series were incorrect, or they worked out whatever problems were preventing them from releasing the series (after all, we've seen three
X-Men movies come out in the last few years).
Here's a look at
early artwork, which is subject to change. The artwork includes a banner across the top that mentions "Marvel Comic Book Collection." Could it be that we'll see more Marvel animated shows coming in 2009? That's pure speculation on our part, but we think it's a good sign.
You can
preorder Volume 1 and
Volume 2 from Amazon.com for just $16.99 each.
