X-Men - Key Art (and an Improbable Date) Found for Volume 5 on DVD

Final group of episodes is on the way, according to the designer of the front cover art

Last April we showed off early pencil-and-inks key art for X-Men - Marvel Comic Book Collection Volume 3 on DVD, which arrived this past September along with Volume 4. That VERY early look at the front cover was posted by the artist, David Nakayama, at his website well in advance of the studio's revelation of the finished packaging.

Now readers have alerted us that Nakayama has done it again, with an advance look at the final DVD release for the classic 1992 animated series! While Disney hasn't yet announced X-Men - Marvel Comic Book Collection Volume 5, Nakayama's posted at his website the key art that he's designed for this upcoming release. Nakayama says that this DVD title is coming out on "March 3rd," and that "Disney just released a teaser image of the finished package." That date probably isn't accurate, however, because it's a Wednesday (correction: a Monday), and DVD releases occur on Tuesdays. Disney has begun revealing their schedule for the March/April/May period, but this title hasn't come up yet. (NOTE: We've learned that the 3/3/10 release date applies to Australia, not to North America.)

Nor have we been able to locate that finished image Nakayama mentions at the studio's password-protected press site, and our retail contacts haven't found it so far at the studio's similar retailer B2B site, either. That may come later, however. While we wait for that, here's a look at the key art Nakayama provides at his website, which includes Captain America on it thanks to his guest appearance in one episode, "Old Soldiers." Head to Nakayama's site for his full description, and the original picture post. Our thanks to our readers, beginning with "Nathan," for the heads-up about that!

Nakayama also teases us by saying that "Even though this is the last of the X-Men covers, I've got something else along the same lines cookin' as we speak." This will surely add fuel to the rumors that Marvel/Disney - who officially tied the knot yesterday - is working on similar DVD releases of the 1994 Spider-Man animated series, possibly timed to tie in with the planned May 2011 theatrical debut of Spider-Man 4. Stay tuned and we'll let you know if we find out anything further about any such releases.
