This past weekend we received a number of e-mails from fans of the classic '90s animated series
X-Men. While each of them were, of course, excited about yesterday's DVD releases of
X-Men - Marvel Comic Book Collection Volume 1 and
X-Men - Marvel Comic Book Collection Volume 2, that wasn't why they were writing. In fact, they were letting us know about possible early cover art floating around the 'net for
X-Men - Marvel Comic Book Collection Volume 3 on DVD!
The pencils-and-inks key artwork for the first two DVD releases were done by David Nakayama, who's well known for his artwork on comic books such as
Marvel Adventures, Grimm Fairy Tales, City of Heroes and more. At his official website he maintains an
online store, which allows fans to buy the pencil-and-ink artwork for his cover art. At the end of last week, fans had discovered one such item listed there, for "
X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES DVD BOX ART--VOL. 3. Pencils and Inks."
The artwork which was there has since been removed, and there is no telling whether this is going to be the finalized key art which well eventually go on a
Volume 3 in-store DVD release, or if it was early artwork that was still waiting on all the appropriate approvals. In either case, it certainly appears that it was an error that this graphic was shown on Nakayama's site at all, given the swift removal in the past couple of days (while here, we were trying to get more information about the release to accompany this story...no dice, however).
Since the artwork shown over the weekend is easily findable around the internet, though, we have no compunctions about sharing it with our readers (we had retrieved it before it was pulled). Again, this may not be what you end up seeing on store shelves. But then again, perhaps it will be. Our thanks to everybody who wrote in to make sure we knew about this, beginning with "Anthony" (the first reader to give us the heads-up). Stay tuned for updates on
X-Men - Marvel Comic Book Collection Volume 3.
