This past June we
reported that
Weeds - Season 5 had just debuted on Showtime, but Amazon.com was already taking pre-orders for
DVD and
Blu-ray Disc home video releases of the 2009 run of episodes. Now release date was provided at those listings, however, because Lionsgate has not yet formally announced the titles.
We frankly didn't expect to see them until the Summer 2010 timeframe, however, because all previous DVD and Blu-ray releases of
Weeds have come to stores in mid-year, between the last week of May and the last week of July. However, this time we've been thrown a curve-ball: a retailer contact of ours forwarded us a PDF file from the studio, showing early information for the DVD version of
Weeds - Season 5. It provides a street date of
January 12th!
The info sent was only for the DVD, but we presume that the high-def Blu-ray Disc version will arrive day-and-date with it (as every season of
Weeds has since the second one on). Other than that, the information given were just the DVD specs, which seemed fairly standard for these releases: 3 discs, widescreen video, English audio (format wasn't provided, but should be Dolby 5.1 as with previous releases), and subtitles in English and Spanish, with closed captioning as well. No extras, package art or pricing was included, but the Amazon listings show it will be $39.98 SRP for the DVD and $39.99 SRP for the Blu-ray version.
While we are very sure that our sources (one of our absolutely most trusted contacts) provided accurate studio information that's available to them at this time, we however have no way to be certain that Lionsgate's plans are completely finalized; the date could still be subject to change (presumably to best tie in with the premiere of the show's sixth season, since it has been renewed). We'll keep an eye on this title, of course, and update you if we hear anything further. In the meantime, we can admire the lovely promo art below, and hope it turns into the box art cover when that finally shows up. We'll bring that to you when we have it, so stay tuned!
