On December 19, 1971, CBS aired a made-for-TV film from called The Homecoming - A Christmas Story. Based on Earl Hamner Jr.'s semi-autobiographical novella, it was the tale of a poor family living in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains during the 1933 Depression, and how their Daddy was away from home that Christmas Eve. The rest of the family worried and waited for his safe arrival, as they made preparations to spend the holiday together...all of them.
This is the Emmy-nominated telefilm that became the pilot for one of America's best-loved weekly shows, The Waltons. It starred Patricia (The Day The Earth Stood Still, In Harm's Way) Neal, who won a Golden Globe for this performance as Olivia Walton, but would not return for the regular series the following September. Many of the cast would return, however, including Richard "John-Boy" Thomas, Ellen "Grandma" Corby, Judy "Mary Ellen" Norton-Taylor, Mary Beth "Erin" McDonough, and Eric "Ben" Scott.
On September 23rd, Paramount is proud to bring you The Homecoming on DVD, as part of their CBS Collection. This is a nice seasonal treat from our friends at the mountain and the eye network! Pricing and other details are not yet available, but watch this space, as they will come soon. In the meantime: "Goodnight, John-Boy."
