The classic Irwin Allen series
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - spun off from the movie and starring Richard Basehart as Admiral Nelson of the
Seaview - has been frustrating fans who want to see it completed on DVD. Fox Home Entertainment released the first three seasons as six half-season sets in 2006 and 2007, and in early 2009 they also released the first half of the fourth (and final) season. All of these are
still available to purchase, but so far fans have been waiting for Fox to release a DVD set of
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Season 4, Vol 2, with the show's final 13 episodes.
Yesterday we received an e-mail from one of our reader, Phil Satterley, with the following message: "
Hi Gord & Dave, You probably got this from a million people but (by slim chance you didn't) might be worth checking out if you have any insiders at Fox: Voyage season 4.2 will be released by the end of the year, Announcement in August." Thank you VERY much, Phil...we had NOT been told that before; you were the first to let us know! And yes, we've sent a note off to a contact at Fox with whom we've talked about
Voyage before, but we did not receive an immediate answer. Still, we apparently have confirmation of Phil's info from another source.
James Finn is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, and is a registered "industry insider" when he posts anything for our friends at the HomeTheaterForum.com message board. Since Phil hadn't informed us what the source of his info was, we checked the HTF to see if there was anything over there speaking about anything similar. What we found was
a post by Mr. Finn, made ten days ago now, that says "
The remaining episodes of Voyage... will be out by the end of the year." And it turns out that it wasn't even his first hint on the topic: a few days earlier than that
Finn also mentioned at an HTF thread about
Season 4, Vol 2 (and fan hopes that it will eventually get released on DVD) that "
VOYAGE is coming.....hang tight."
If the info that Phil sent us in the e-mail is correct, then we'll get the official Fox announcement in August...which starts in a couple of days, so there's a chance we'll get the formal word about this sometime in the next 30 days or so. Being honest here, I had actually given up on this item after such a long wait. It just goes to show you that in the TV-DVD world there are always plenty of surprises waiting just around the corner!
