In all of our recent
coverage of WEP's (World Event Productions) direct release of
Voltron - Fleet of Doom via the Voltron.com online store, we could not help but notice that the "Watch" section of Voltron.com starts by running a video which shows various product, including a couple of scenes where you can spot a picture of what appears to be the upcoming
Black Lion release from Media Blasters:
After seeing this, we wrote to our friends at Media Blasters ("MB") and WEP, asking them if it was possible to send over a full-sized look at that box art. WEP was nice enough to do exactly that, and we've got it for you thanks to them!
Looking at this, it's easy to notice that the black lion, as shown here, doesn't look exactly the same as it was depicted in the original cartoons (example shown at bottom). The "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" look is a dead giveaway, eh? We asked WEP about that, and their response was: "the red nose is a good observation, but like MB mentions in one of their DVD notes how they try to strike a tone between classic images and updated looks." The person we spoke with said that the change doesn't bother them much.
I suppose, in the end, that it won't bother me too much either, because it's the DVD contents that really matter. Still, I think many of the fans agree that it's best to get it as close as possible to the original look. That's not WEP's decision, though...it's MB's. Hopefully they're hearing this feedback. Stay tuned, and we'll keep you updated with a street date, when one is finalized. We expect it JUST before year's end (i.e., December-ish), but that's MB's decision as well. Please stand by!
