This past week we
reported new information about the
September 26th DVD debut of
Voltron: Defender of the Universe - Collection 1: Blue Lion. We showed off the tin packaging pictures that Media Blasters sent us, but we overlooked an important detail about it: it's not the blue lion on that tin!
After we posted that news, and that pic, one of our readers named "Tim" sent us this note:
I can't imagine that you won't get a ton of emails saying this. But the tin artwork for the Volume 1 - Blue Lion set doesn't have the blue lion on it. That is the Green Lion. You can tell by the way the head is more round and also the placement of the ears. I would assume someone making the actual set knows this, but I would have to think that what that is a picture of is a mock up of a set, but hopefully not the Blue Lion set. If that is a mock up of the Blue Lion set, I sure hope someone alerts Media Blasters that they've got the wrong lion on it.
I grabbed an old Voltron toy I have sitting on a shelf and stared hard at it, and I quickly realized that Tim was on-the-money! So I forwarded that message to the folks at Media Blasters, and they got back to me with this important info:
Yes, Tim is correct. The tin in the provided pic is the Green Lion. But it
was merely a sample provided by a bidding company. It is not the final piece,
nor was it meant to be announced as THE cover for the VOLTRON COLLECTION ONE: BLUE LION. The BLUE LION tin is in production and will be a 3D tin version of the art seen on the insert cover...So have faith: the
people working here - from artists to video production - are diehard VOLTRON
fans. There's no way the Green Lion would end up on the Blue Lion Collection! I apologize for the confusion.
Our thanks to Media Blasters for clearing up the confusion! While a final pic of the
Blue Lion set's tin isn't available yet, I am re-posting the "flat" picture of the art (which is used for the insert inside the tin) at the bottom of this news story, so you can try to picture it as a 3D tin!
In the meantime, we turned to the folks at WEP to find out more about one of the extras on this release. We wanted to know what the "Original Pilot: 'The Voltron Trilogy' " is. After all, I'm a huge
Voltron fan, and I've never heard of anything called this name! So WEP was consulted, and here's the reply I got:
From what I understand something was discovered that is essentially a "rough cut" of the pilot with different voices and such and was probably
used as pitch material.
Wow, that sounds very cool, and is an amazing find to include with this release! WEP also says that they are working on even more extras, and that some of them (besides the ones already listed in the previous news) may just find their way onto this release. It's all up to Media Blasters, of course, but WEP is trying to provide them with everything possible to make this *THE* DVD release to get in September! Stay tuned for further updates.
