About a month ago we were excited to
bring you the "tin concept" that Media Blasters had in mind for the
September 26th DVD release of
Voltron: Defender of the Universe - Set 1. As cool as it looked, though, it was not meant to be! One of our readers, "Philip", gave us the heads up this morning (thank you!) that the
VoltronDVD.com website had posted an update to this. In the site's "News" section, under "Updates", came word of why the change has occurred:

So sometimes we design ideas that are a bit out of the realm of functionality. Our first idea is a bit expensive to make, a little too big and can't stack properly...alas, a new direction must be taken. So here is the new, more fit-on-your-shelf friendly idea. The company made us this concept piece and we ran with it. The lion will be embossed and the bottom will be recessed so each volume can rest up against each other without causing damage. We also have our final art for the tin ready, so check out the download section to catch a peek at both.
Indeed, you can go to that site's "Extras" section, click on the "Downloads" button, and the first thing you will see is the front and back of the embossed lion concept. We've got a close-up of the front of that for you below, along with the other "final" shot for the tin that was mentioned. They are still extremely cool, and we certainly appreciate all the effort that Media Blasters is going through to make this a fabulous release for the fans. Count me in, of course!
