Last summer we
reported that World Events Productions (WEP) was exclusively releasing a limited DVD release of the
Voltron "movie special" production
Fleet of Doom, a feature which bridged the gap between the "Lion Force" and "Vehicle Force" versions of
Voltron, bringing them together for one epic adventure.
The release is still
there, for folks who prefer to order it that way for $19.95 plus shipping charges. But a number of our readers, such as "Demetris G", noticed that as of this past Sunday the title was ALSO being
listed for pre-order at Amazon.com. It shows a special ship date of this Friday,
February 29th, in honor of Leap Year Day. The cost there is a tad higher, at $24.99.
Despite getting it at a lower cost straight from WEP, some readers were actually upset to see it at Amazon. As "Demetris G" put it, they thought it was to be exclusive to WEP's site and never available elsewhere, so feel that WEP has sort-of "tricked" them by making it more widely available. I contacted WEP's Jeremy Corray about this, and he responded with this statement:
It's true! After selling through our initial very small run of DVDs, I've decided to go ahead and create another run of 1000 DVDs to be available on Amazon.com's Advantage system, so that fans who might be looking for it online can more easily find it. I also fixed some compatibility problems with older DVD players, and bumped up the slide show. I hope this way more fans will get to experience Fleet of Doom as it is still a very limited run.
Believe me, this doesn't come from a place of greed. It really is just me, Jeremy at WEP, creating this (and Vytor, Denver, and Saber Rider) all by myself in a little office in St. Louis, so that fans like me can at least have some of their favorite WEP shows on DVD this generation.
The good news is I hope to have Denver Vol.2 out soon, and I am working
very hard on convincing the powers that be to make a complete Saber
Rider series box set available as well. Fans should know they have one
of them "on the inside", working hard to make sure they get to experience
these classic cartoon gems!
My personal thanks to Jeremy for being so candid, and for the scoop on
Denver (we'll post a separate story on that when Jeremy has more in-depth info for us about it), and for the effort on
Saber Rider. If you would rather get the release through Amazon (and we know some of you prefer it that way), then it's there waiting for you to lock in your order!
