In Summer 2007, World Events Productions ("WEP") and Media Blasters ("MB," specifically their Anime Works division) were in the middle of collaborating on the five "Lion Force"
Voltron DVD collections, being released to stores. They were also looking ahead to the follow-up releases of "Vehicle Force"
Voltron episodes (which we're in the middle of at this time, and concludes this month (3/24) and next (4/28) with the shipments of
Collection 7: Land Team and
Collection 8: Sea Team).
Back in the Summer of '07, though, MB wasn't picking up their option for a retailer release of the
Voltron Lion Force/Vehicle Force "team up movie,"
Fleet of Doom. So WEP moved forward with
releasing it directly, exclusively via their Voltron.com website at first. About 6-7 months later, WEP decided to also
circulate it at Amazon, supplying it directly to the e-tailer themselves. WEP's
Fleet of Doom DVD at Amazon is still listed today.
But now MB has picked up the option to release
Voltron: Defender of the Universe - Fleet of Doom at general retail, which means it comes to a store near you beginning
May 26th. The list price of $19.95 is the same, but with the higher volumes of production on a general retail release we'll see more discounting happen on the title now. In fact, there's
a separate Amazon pre-order listing for the MB release, currently discounted to $13.99 as of this writing (subject to change at Amazon's discretion, without notice). We don't have details or package art yet, but it's entirely possible that MB will decide to change the box art design for general distribution. The contents, though, are more likely to remain the same as what we saw on
the original direct release. We'll update you when we know more about it; stay tuned!
