Voltron: Defender of the Universe - Blu-ray Release of Fleet of Doom Coming This Fall

Includes bonus episodes of Lion Force and Vehicle Force, plus a 'Blooper Reel'

Posted by David Lambert
In a bid to destroy the Galaxy Alliance, evil King Zarkon joins forces with the leader of the Drule Empire, Viceroy Throk. They create the largest armada of destroyers that has ever been seen in space. When this Fleet of Doom begins obliterating one key Galaxy Alliance outpost after another, they realize the threat is too great even for just one of the mighty Voltron units to deal with.

Therefore, they send the call both to the stellar ship Explorer and to the Castle of Lions. Keith, Princess Allura, Hunk, Lance and Pidge fly into battle in their robot lions, alongside Commanders Jeff, Krik and Cliff with their vehicle teams. When Prince Lotor arrives as the head of a super Robeast made of five united Robeasts, Keith and Jeff give the order to form both Voltrons!

Haggar targets Keith and Allura with a curse, and the Fleet of Doom is closing in on Galaxy Garrison. The ultimate giant robot team-up is Earth's last hope! Starring: Neil Ross (GI Joe, Transformers), Jack Angel (Spiderman), Michael Bell (GI Joe), Peter Cullen (Transformers), BJ Ward (GI Joe), and Lennie Weinrib (H.R. Pufnstuf).
Last year the folks at Media Blasters/Anime Works and World Events Productions put out a retail release of Voltron: Defender of the Universe - Fleet of Doom on DVD. This team-up between the Lion Force and Vehicle Force won't be just on standard def for long, though, because a high-def Blu-ray Disc version is in the works, and coming out on September 28th. Extras include an Animation Blooper Reel, and the first regular episodes of both the Lion Force storyline and the Vehicle Force storyline. Cost is $19.95 SRP, but you can pre-order it at a discount using the Amazon button link below. Underneath that is the box art. Our thanks to one of our readers, "Mike," who was the first to write in and make sure we knew about this!

Since there are a pair of regular Voltron: Defender of the Universe episodes on this Blu-ray, fans will wonder if this means that the regular series will also come to the high-def format. WEP says that it's a possibility, depending on how high the interest turns out to be for this release. In the meantime they are working on getting DVDs together for the 1998 series Voltron: The Third Dimension, originally planned for this summer but now pushed back to the fall. And of course there is the eventual home video releases for the upcoming new NickToons series which continues the Lion Force story. And of course there's a live-action film in the works. Stay tuned for all of that, as further developments come in. In the meantime, if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, be sure to check out the Voltron game app...I have it on my iPod, and it's tons of fun for (as of this writing) just 99 cents!
