1978. ABC prime time. Following Eight is Enough
(sadly not on DVD yet due to legal issues holding it up) and Charlie's Angels
(whose fourth season just arrived
on DVD), the "alphabet network" aired Vega$
, starring Robert Urich as "Dan Tanna." The show was created by Michael Mann (before his time on Miami Vice, Crime Story
or a long list of blockbuster films!), and Executive Produced by Aaron Spelling and Douglas S. Cramer (names you would later see together on Dynasty
and The Love Boat
Urich's co-stars included Phyllis Davis (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
and Judy Landers (BJ and the Bear
) as assistants who used to be showgirls (Landers, as the less-capable "Angie," would soon exit and leave the spotlight on "Beatrice," played by Davis). Greg Morris (Mission: Impossible
) played Lt. David Nelson of the Las Vegas Police Department, and film star Tony Curtis (The Defiant Ones, Spartacus, Some Like It Hot, Houdini
) showed up from time to time as "Slick" Phil Roth, owner of the Desert Inn Hotel/Casino, hiring Tanna to clear up all sorts of messes.
The pilot episode, "High Roller," included Curtis and other guest stars such as Red Buttons, Scatman Crothers, June Allyson, Michael Lerner, Catherine Hickland and The Price is Right
model Dian Parkinson. Guest stars during the main first season included Vic Tayback, Abe Vigoda, Morey Amsterdam, Cristina Ferrare, John Carradine, Troy Donahue, Alex Trebek, Shelley Fabares, Sid Caesar, Anne Francis, Jonathan Harris, Bobby Van, Slim Pickens, Lauren Tewes, Kim Basinger, Pernell Roberts, Shelley Berman, Isabel Sanford, Robert Reed and Maureen McCormick (together in the same episode), Cesar Romero, Della Reese, Doc Severinsen (as himself), Lynda Day George, Randolph Mantooth, Dawn Wells, George Takei, Muhammad Ali (as himself), Robert Loggia, Clifton Davis, Joan Van Ark, Adam West, Leslie Nielsen, Michael Ansara, Henry Darrow and Kim Cattrall.
The folks at CBS DVD and Paramount Home Video have kept a poker face about this series for a long time now, but they've finally shown their hand! Vega$ - The 1st Season
is coming to DVD at last, and you can cash in your chips and take home all 22 first-season episodes on October 20th
. Will the pilot episode be included with that? We presume so, but that's by no means confirmed at this time. Details are very thin, with the only other info provided so far being that the video is full frame, and the audio is English mono. Other specs, pricing, extras (if any) and package art is still locked up in the cashier's cage, but we'll bring it to you once the studio deals us those cards. Stay tuned!
The announcement today from CBS/Paramount was for Vega$ - The 1st Season, Volume 1
, a half-season set containing only the first part of the season and running 567 miniutes long. Still no word on whether that includes the pilot episode or not, but we're optimistic on that aspect of it. TVShowsOnDVD is grateful to the retailer contact who pointed this out, and regrets any misunderstanding or inconvenience to the studio and our readers.
