Van der Valk - '70s Mysteries Series Crosses the Pond from the UK to the USA & Canada

Acorn Media bringing a DVD Set 1 out in October

Posted by David Lambert
An unorthodox cop on the streets of old Amsterdam: Commisaris Simon "Piet" van der Valk (Barry Foster, Frenzy, Smiley's People) has the air of a man who has seen it all. And he probably has. As a detective with the Amsterdam police, his daily caseload brings him into regular contact with the seamy underside of the Dutch capital. From brothels to transvestite clubs to drug dens, Van der Valk moves in the city's dark corners that tourists rarely see.

Suave but cynical, the cultured Van der Valk has a taste for the finer things in life-symphony music, good wine, and the cooking of his beautiful French-born wife. But even long-suffering Arlette (Susan Travers) can tell that Piet is most at home when he's at work. There, alongside easygoing Inspecteur Johnny Kroon (Michael Latimer), every new case is a personal challenge to this unorthodox cop on the streets of old Amsterdam.
Acorn Media has announced that the 1972 U.K. program Van der Valk Mysteries - Set 1 will come to DVD in the US ($39.99 SRP) and Canada (CA$52.99 SRP) on October 6th. This 2-disc set running 306 minutes will contain 6 episodes presented in full screen video and English stereo audio. It also includes a bonus biography of the Van der Valk creator, novelist Nicolas Freeling. We've got a look at the package art, along with a pre-order link for this title at Amazon. Current Amazon's listing says "Set 2," but we've notified Acorn so that they can talk to Amazon and get it corrected to properly say "Set 1."
