The iconic British series, seen on Masterpiece Theatre and A&E. With 4+ hours of new bonus material! "Extraordinary" - The New York Times.
Upstairs: the wealthy, aristocratic Bellamys. Downstairs: their loyal and lively servants. For nearly 30 years, they share a fashionable townhouse at 165 Eaton Place in London's posh Belgravia neighborhood, surviving social change, political upheaval, scandals, and the horrors of the First World War.
Series Four takes place during the Great War, from 1914-18, and no one is unaffected. James fights in the trenches of France, leaving his wife, Hazel, to manage the household. Ruby departs Eaton Place for a job in a munitions factory, Georgina trains as a nurse, and Rose drives a bus. Tragedy strikes upstairs and down, but Lord Richard, long widowed, finds love once more. This season won two Emmys, including outstanding limited series.
Starring Jean Marsh (Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse), David Langton (The Spoils of War), Simon Williams (Sword of Honoiur), Meg Wynn Owen (Gosford Park), Gordon Jackson (The Professionals), Angela Baddeley (Martin Chuzzlewit), Christopher Beeny (Last of the Summer Wine), and Lesley-Anne Down (North and South).
Acorn Media continues their run of season set releases with Upstairs, Downstairs - Series 4: 40th Anniversary Collection on DVD this August 23rd. The 4-disc collection comes with 13 episodes (approx. 659 minutes), plus bonus material that includes " The Making of Upstairs, Downstairs, Part 4," episode commentaries and Russell Harty Plus with Jean Marsh and Angela Baddeley. The episodes are presented as they were in 1974: full screen video, and English mono audio. English subtitles are also on board. Acorn does note, however, that "due to the age of these programs and the improved resolution that DVD provides, you may notice occasional flaws in the image and audio on this DVD presentation that were beyond our ability to correct from the original materials." Fair enough. Cost is $49.99 SRP in the USA, and CA$64.99 SRP in Canada. Here's the package art:
