A&E Home Video has a trio of "
Universe-al" home video title announcements for us to share with you! Let's take them one at a time, with package art pictures for the first two items found at the bottom.
First we've got word about about DVD ($29.95 SRP) and Blu-ray Disc ($39.95 SRP) releases of
The Universe - The Complete Season 5. These will be available on
January 11th, and each 2-disc set includes extras (which haven't been revealed just yet). Here's the studio description:
History launches a dramatic new, breathtaking exploration into the cosmos on DVD and Blu-ray! It's been 50 years since man ventured into the unknown, and the heavens are only now yielding their greatest secrets. Follow in the galactic path of THE UNIVERSE, which this season leads us even further into the world beyond our own with THE UNIVERSE: THE COMPLETE SEASON FIVE on both Blu-ray and DVD.
From robotic rovers on Mars to NASA probes slamming into comets and deep space telescopes capturing violent images of the birth of stars, season five of this illuminating HISTORY series explores how these discoveries were made - and who made them. Dramatic CGI and interviews with expert cosmologists, astronomers and astrophysicists bring the history of the heavens down to earth and provide a glimpse into our future.
THE UNIVERSE: THE COMPLETE SEASON FIVE includes all 8 episodes on 2 DVDs or Blu-ray discs and featured episodes include "Mars: The New Evidence," "Time Travel," "Secrets of the Space Probes," and "Dark Future of the Sun"
Second is word of a first-of-its-kind TV-on-BD3D release! Yes,
The Universe - 7 Wonders of the Solar System is coming out on
January 11th as well, in the Blu-ray 3D format. As the Amazon.com pre-order listing (see link just provided) says, "
This Blu-ray disc will display only in 2D without special hardware. To watch this movie in Blu-ray 3D, you will need a 3D-capable television that comes with active-shutter glasses and a 3D-capable Blu-ray player." Cost for the BD3D title is $29.95 SRP for a single disc running 47 minutes. Here's the studio description of this item, which tells you everything else we know right now about this title:
Take an exhilarating, unprecedented tour of the seven most amazing wonders of our solar system as the #1 selling HISTORY franchise explodes in 3D!
We are in the midst of the greatest era of space discovery. Twenty first-century spacecraft and sophisticated imaging technology are venturing into uncharted territory every day, and much of the extraordinary phenomena are happening right in our own cosmic backyard. Now, For the first time ever, take an exhilarating 3D voyage into the cosmos - you've never seen THE UNIVERSE like this with THE UNIVERSE 3D: 7 WONDERS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM!
Marrying the groundbreaking, CGI-laden #1 selling HISTORY franchise with cutting-edge 3D technology, this incredible program - destined to be a 3D stand-out as the new format gets underway - THE UNIVERSE 3D brings viewers an unprecedented tour of the seven most amazing wonders of our solar system, beginning with a trip to Enceladus, one of Saturn's outer moons, where icy geysers spout from its surface. Then venture to Saturn's famous rings, which contain mountain ranges that rival the Alps; dive into Jupiter's Great Red Spot, the eye of the biggest storm in the solar system; soar through the asteroid Belt, made of millions of rocks left over from the formation of the solar system; trek up Mount Olympus, the largest volcano located on Mars; have a close encounter with the searing surface of the sun; and finish the journey by exploring our very own home - planet Earth.
Playable on both 3D and standard blu-ray players (but only viewable on a 3D TV), THE UNIVERSE 3D will deliver viewers to the edge of the universe like never before!
The third and final title for today is farther out (forgive the pun!) than the other two, so we have less info about it, and no cover art yet. It's going to be the
April 26th release of
The Universe - The Complete Series Megaset. Cost is $149.95 for a 20-DVD package with all 5 seasons, plus the twentieth DVD is a bonus disc. We're told it will also be released in the high-def Blu-ray Disc format, but we don't have any cost or details about it so far. Stay tuned and we'll keep you updated as further developments occur!
In the meantime, here is the package art for the first two titles we're reporting on today:
