From 2000 to 2007, Classic Media has released a handful of single-disc "best of" DVDs for the classic animated show
Underdog. The 1964 series starred the voices of funnyman Wally Cox (
The Hollywood Squares, Mister Peepers, The Adventures of Hiram Holliday) as "Shoe-Shine Boy/Underdog," Norma MacMillan (
The New Casper Cartoon Show, Davey and Goliath, Koko the Clown) as "Sweet Polly Purebred" and Allen Swift (
The Howdy Doody Show, Diver Dan, The Mad Mad Mad Monsters) as both "Riff-Raff" and "Simon Bar-Sinister" (while supporting cartoons in the show included Don Adams of
Get Smart as "Tennessee Tuxedo" and Larry Storch of
F Troop as "Phineas J. Whoopie").
Underdog fans - myself included! - have longed for more episodes of the childhood favorite, and it looks like 2012 will be our year at last! And in the first month, at that! According to
a pre-order listing that popped up overnight at Amazon.com,
January 24th see the release of
Underdog - The Complete Series on DVD! Priced at $69.97 SRP for a preliminary running time of 1260 minutes, this is being distributed by Vivendi Entertainment and so it could be coming from Classic Media again, or - since Classic has licensed some items to them recently - it could instead be coming from Shout! Factory! None of these studios have formally announced the title, however, and so we don't have any further information yet. Or artwork. Nor do we know if the supporting cartoons such as
Tennessee Tuxedo, Go Go Gophers and others will be included. The answers to these, and other questions, will have to wait for our next exciting news update. Stay tuned!
