Yesterday we
posted the long-awaited release date and box art for
Twin Peaks - Definitive Gold Box Edition. The DVD set is currently planned for
October 30th, and the cover art we have is shown again below. We've learned one thing from our readers, who e-mailed us and who posted their thoughts at various online discussion forums: a significant number of you *REALLY* hate that cover art! Hopefully the powers that be at CBS/Paramount are listening.
After our story yesterday, our friends at the David Lynch fan site Dugpa.com made
their own post, mentioning what we had published (thank you) and continuing with some new information of their own. One of the most significant pieces of information they had was that the studio states that they have no current plans to release the pilot episode separately. Folks who have the first season and second season DVDs, and would only wish to add the pilot episode as a separate, single disc release, won't be able to do so any time soon. To get the pilot on DVD this year, you'll have to buy the
Definitive Gold Box Edition.
They also take the studio to task for calling this "Definitive", when the Deleted Scenes which David Lynch has, and would like to get remastered and included on this release, won't be included because the studio would not agree to pay for the cost of the remastering. The choice Lynch was given was to include the deleted scenes as they are, looking pretty bad, or to not include them at all. Lynch declined for them to be included as-is, apparently feeling that the aging materials, just like the broadcast episodes, would need to undergo a treatment in order to be properly enjoyed by fans. Note that Lynch ran into the same issue with New Line, with the
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me film release.
Personally, I wonder at calling this set "definitive" when that film is very likely to not be included in the set, since New Line owns it and is not known to have licensed it to CBS/Paramount. Not that the set wouldn't be fine if it kept to just the television-broadcast material, but "definitive" seems like the wrong word to use. Making that change to the title to leave off that particular word, and making other changes to the box art in response to fan feedback, probably would not delay the release plans.
So, what WILL be included on this set? Dugpa.com's article says that "
...they will be releasing the rest of the interviews that they saved over from the Season 2 box set along with some new ones that they have been shooting over the last few months. I also made a separate inquiry about whether or not they would address some of the audio issues that fans had complained about or if they would include the original 2.0 audio mixes as one would think that a "Definitive" set would include the original audio mixes. I was told that the masters were locked but the request would be "passed on" to the powers that be. Additional rumors that the Season 2 Soundtrack may be packaged with this release, but then again, if that happens, it will also b released as a stand alone CD."
Stay tuned, because we'll be keeping an eye on this, and we'll let you know about any further developments.

UPDATE (6/26/07): CBS/Paramount has requested that we remove the artwork previously posted.
