A few weeks ago Lynchnet.com posted information on the 2nd season of Twin Peaks coming to DVD. Here at TVShowsOnDVD, we've been putting off relaying that information so we could look into it and post our own findings...what we had heard up to that point didn't quite gibe with what Lynchnet posted. So we wanted to double-check with the studios involved, and now we have something to say! We apologize that it took a while, but here's what we've found out.
Lynchnet reports that we're likely to see Paramount release the second season of the show in late-2005, as well as a re-release of the season 1 set with the pilot included. Artisan had owned the rights to the series (except the pilot), and released season 1 back in 2001. Paramount gained control of the rights when they acquired the Republic Pictures catalog along with Spelling Entertainment.
The news that Lynchnet.com posted sounded good, but as stated above we needed to do some investigation before posting anything. You see, when Artisan released the season 1 set, they didn't have rights to the pilot episode and couldn't include it in the set. It was rumored that Warner Bros owned the pilot, but they have told us today that their rights expired in 1997. The company that owns the rights to the pilot is a mystery, but it sounds like Paramount could indeed have obtained them.
We gave Paramount a call and asked about the set, but we were simply told that there isn't anything currently on the schedule for Twin Peaks. That doesn't mean the information provided by Lynchnet is wrong, it just means Paramount hasn't scheduled anything.
So, it sounds like Lynchnet could be correct, and that a release *could* be possible in late-2005, but we won't know for sure until DVDs are formally scheduled and announced. We'll keep an eye open for any news, but I doubt we'll hear anything in the first half of the year. Stay tuned, though...you never know!
