Gerry Anderson, the producer behind such television classics as
Thunderbirds and
Space: 1999, has one of his earliest efforts coming to DVD later this year. The second TV program he ever produced, a black-and-white marionette program titled
Torchy, the Battery Boy, is apparently coming out with all 52 episodes on disc this
November 25th.
Anderson produced the first series (or season) of this U.K. show, 26 episodes in all, but did not produce the second and final series of 26 episodes. Torchy, who got his name from the flashlight-like lamp set in his forehead, would climb into a rocket during the opening credits of each episode and fly off to his new adventures. Characters in the stories, each running about 15 minutes long, would include Mr Bumbledrop, his dog Pom-Pom, sister and brother Bossy Boots and Bogey Boots, Flopsy the Rag Doll and Pongo the Pirate.
Listings at Amazon, while not taking pre-orders just yet, clearly show that Nov. 25th will see the release of
Torchy, the Battery Boy - Series 1,
Torchy, the Battery Boy - Series 2 and
Torchy, the Battery Boy - Series 1 and 2. No package art is available yet, nor any details (not even the cost, or the studio putting these out). But stay tuned and we'll update you, if reader interest warrants it!
