Yesterday morning we posted news about a new listing on the BBC America website advertising the third season of Doctor Who, and reader Clem Urban wrote us later in the day to let us know that there was a similar listing there for the first season ("series", as they say in the U.K.) of spin-off show Torchwood, shown with a release date of Tuesday, January 8, 2008. As with Doctor Who - Series 3, the listing starts by stating, "This title is still being worked on, so we cannot take pre-orders yet". It's followed by this description:
The 21st Century is when it all changes and you’ve got to be ready… Separate from the government, outside the police, beyond the United Nations: Torchwood sets its own rules. Led by the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness, the Torchwood team delves into the unknown and fights the impossible.
Alongside the charismatic Captain Jack is Gwen. Initially an outsider, her first meeting with the team sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth, throwing her into an unfamiliar but exciting world. Clear and instinctive, she understands people and is, at times, the group’s conscience. But can she completely separate herself from her normal life?
The rest of the bold and passionate team is made up of charming medic Owen Harper, young and hedonistic but utterly brilliant; reserved Toshiko Sato who specialises in computers, surveillance and all things technical; the super-intelligent and intense Suzie Costello who has devoted her life to the strange alien artefacts under her control; and Ianto Jones who is far more important that his receptionist’s role suggests.
From an underground base built on a rift in time and space, the team respond to any alien threat – a meterorite crash landing, sightings of extra-terrestial technology, an unusual autopsy report, the spread of a deadly alien virus.
Part CSI, part X-Files, Torchwood is the team we’d all love to be part of, where excitement comes before morality and the rules are made as you go along...
Thanks to Clem for letting us know. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on developments. The listing at the BBC America site has the following cast picture where the DVD cover art would usually go. We don't know if this will end up being the key art for the set, but even if it turns out not to be, we thought we would share:
