The BBC's Torchwood is such a hit on U.S. television, breaking ratings records for BBC America and acclaimed by critics as "sci-fi with attitude" (Chicago Tribune) and "one of TV's most entertainment of sci-fi romps" (USA Today), that it is being remade for U.S. cable network Starz. Timed to coincide with the premiere of the new series on Starz, BBC will bring together the complete, original UK series in this comprehensive box set.
Separate from the government, outside the police, beyond the United Nations, Torchwood sets its own rules. Led by the enigmatic, ever watchful Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman, Doctor Who, Central Park West), the Torchwood team delves into the unknown and fights the impossible. Everyone who works for Torchwood is young. Some say that's because it's a new science. Others say it's because they die young.
Many fans of the BBC series (and I have to include myself in this group) are counting the upcoming Starz production of
Torchwood: Miracle Day this summer as the "fourth series" (or season) of the popular show which was spun off from
Doctor Who. There were two traditional-length series/seasons at 13 episodes each, followed by the five-episode "third series" titled
Torchwood: Children of Earth. After that adventure, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) left Earth for a bit...which is why we saw him in an alien bar in a brief cameo for David Tennant's final episode of
Doctor Who ("The End of Time, Part 2"). Jack is reuniting this summer with Gwen (Eve Myles) and others in the new 10-episode production, which also stars Mekhi Phifer (
ER's "Dr. Gregory Pratt") as "Rex Matheson," a CIA agent who gets caught up in events beyond his previous experience.
To celebrate the new adventures, which premiere on the Starz cable channel this July 8th, the BBC has announced today that
Torchwood - The Complete Original UK Series will be available on DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc this
July 19th. Running 1571 minutes for 31 episodes, the cost of the 14-disc DVD version will be $119.98 SRP, and the cost of the 12-disc Blu-ray release will be just ten dollars more, at $129.95 SRP. The studio's info mentions "10 hours of bonus features," but doesn't specify yet if any of those extras are new (as compared to the previous individual-season releases). Below we have an online trailer for
Torchwood itself, followed by images of the Blu-ray and DVD packages for
