A bit over a month ago we
reported that the high-definition Blu-ray Disc version of
Torchwood - The Complete 1st Series had been delayed by BBC Video: originally announced for a September 16th release, it had been pushed back to a November 11th release in both the USA and Canada, per info obtained at the time from distributor Warner Home Video. Now we've gotten word that the release has been "un-delayed"!
We'll admit right off the bat that this was first brought to our attention by a post yesterday
at Blu-Ray.com, so our thanks to Josh and the folks over there for bringing it up. We confirmed with both Warner Home Video's online press site, and directly with BBC Video's publicity staff, that
Torchwood - The Complete 1st Series on Blu-ray disc is indeed back on schedule for
September 16th.
While no official reason was given for the change and the change-back, it's worth noting that we've been getting a lot of feedback from sources in-the-know that the Blu-ray Disc production facilities are jam-packed, I mean filled to the brim, with all the releases that studios have ordered for the holidays, and afterward. And not just the manufacturing plants, but the authoring houses as well. There would be different kinds of impact from that sort of situation, and this could very well be one of them.
Another impact might be behind the reasons why, as we
discussed yesterday, shows like
Reaper are getting a DVD release, but no Blu-ray for now...and might help explain why the BBC is bringing us the first season of
Torchwood and other shows on Blu, but not being able to play catch-up and also bring out the second season at the same time, even though the
Season 2 DVD release is happening on the same day.
Food for thought, anyway. If you haven't ordered the
Torchwood - The Complete 1st Series Blu-ray yet, you still have time before it ships in a couple of weeks.
CORRECTION: While the USA release date for
Torchwood - The Complete 1st Series Blu-ray Disc is indeed back on for September 16th, as stated above, the reversal of the date change did not apply to Canada. North of the border, the release date for the high-definition version is still scheduled for November 11th. Canadians can
